Well, if you go by today's fashion, I'd say it's way too much. But it's, well, still tame compared to what was trendy when I was a kid... We were toying a bit with nostalgia here, the photographer and I were born days apart, so it's kind of a generational thing, I guess. It's amazing what good makeup and hair styling can do. I think having professional makeup artists like Way Bandy teaching me how to do makeup made all the difference in making me look good and older when I was young. Like from everybody else around, I learned all I could from them. I was a precocious sponge for knowledge back then. As soon as he understood I wanted to learn, he was particularly good, and descriptive of what and why he was doing as he made up the models. The fun bit was he taught me in painting terms which I understood. He was a fine art painter long before he took up doing makeup work. Also, having perpetually shaky hands and being almost blind without glasses really puts a limit on what I can do. So I just keep to a minimal few things that really make a difference. We don't really have LGBT support groups here, except for specialized ones that focus on a single issue or two. There's a very good one that houses and helps young LGBTs who had to run away from home (they have results; and groups in every major French city, which makes them a prime target,unfortunately). Some others are for parents of LGBTs, or people facing homophobic discrimination at work. And obviously the ones focused on AIDS. Less specialized groups, though, are much less about support than they are about socializing and planning political action. Which is probably a good thing because I'd feel totally out of place in any kind of actual support group.

I've talked about it a bit in the past, but I have sampled MOST of the LGBT support groups available to me. PFLAG was by far and away the best group consistently.
Trans Spectrum was incredibly hit and miss, and mostly just shit. My first time there an older co-facilitator of the group turned to me (or a slim chance the poor girl next to me, but it was probably me since I looked like SHIT) "You don't look like you belong here to me, but it's not my place to make that call *rambles slightly about inclusion*" and I went a few more times after that, but most of the women who went were unstable and catty as hell and I just didn't want to be anywhere near that.
And then I went to my therapists group which has been running for nearly a decade. And that shit was almost as bad as the spectrum group, less catty and more crazy.
I haven't been to a group in MONTHS. I went to a PFLAG group back in maybe January just to see who was there. It was nice, but most of the people I had gotten familiar with weren't at that meeting. But the people who recognized me were very impressed with my progress so I guess there's that. I've talked with my girlfriend about maybe going to a group just because she's never been and she might find something useful out of it, but... I dunno.

My last ex, from back when I half-assedly tried to present as male, was a terf and believed it was just a thing you could turn on or off.
