I have this friend who came out because of me. We met in a residential treatment facility in Atlanta just a few months ago, she already knew she wanted to transition but she also knew what piece of shit her bigoted parents were/are.
Well, we became immediate friends, myself and two girls helped her learn to dress and makeup and so forth. Eventually she came fully out and told her therapist that she wanted to be referred to as Ruby with female pronouns. (They had refused up to that point before, we were all pissed at them but they were really just waiting for her to take the initiative and request it herself. Was a lesson for her in taking control of her life, after that I had a lot more respect for those counselors)
She was so fucking happy now with everyone calling her Ruby and treating her the way she deserved, it was a beautiful thing to watch. This is completely without hormones by the way.
Well, and I don't mean to scare you here, but her parents really are complete worthless fuckwads. They cut her off, 100%, refused to even talk to her and as far as I understand it, pretend she doesn't even exist. She lost her insurance that day and the facility had to kick her out as she had no way to pay the rediculous cost of the place. She was homeless within hours, suicidal within just a few more. Ended up inpatient in a hospital for an attempted overdose like the next day.
Now I know that's not a great story, because of that ending, but thankfully, that isn't the ending.
She's out now, out of the hospital that is, and living with some friends of ours from the program. They took her into their homes and have paid out of their pocket to get her on her feet. She has a job and she's saving up for an apartment of her own right now. We're working with her to try and find an informed consent provider here in Atlanta but it's surprisingly harder than I expected it be.
