I don't have the full story either. Just bits and pieces. When one of our friends warned me off the ex he used the words "abusive dickhole". The trouble with this situation is it has two real outcomes right now;
One - You ask him out, he accepts, all along he still has feelings for his ex and it could go down any route rather quickly...
Two - You don't ask him out, try to stay friends, he falls in for his ex again and more than likely stays with him briefly before it all explodes again.
Scenario two is probably the better one, but I really couldn't say. Just do what you thinks right, if you think you can hold yourself back and just observe it then maybe thats the better one.

I guess option 2 really is the smarter one. because last week we met and talked for two hours and he pretty much told me everything about his ex. One of his ex's best friends was his previous boyfriend, which apparently caused some tension from the get-go, because his ex wouldn't let him meet that guy. He just met with him alone all the time. Then one day the guy I'm seeing ran into his own ex, he didn't tell him bf at first. When he told him, he freaked out, some days later they broke up. So it seems like they always had some trouble.
