There is an idea in film making that "If you're going to have a gun on the wall, someone better use it." If the story calls of a gay character it must be painfully obvious for the audience that he is gay right off the bat, unless the subtlety of their sexual preference is used in the story.
Its hard to sell being gay as something masculine. Not many people would take a batman who takes cocks up the ass seriously.
