I refuse to believe that it's impossible to create a character, let the spectator or reader know they are trans (explicitely or not), and still give them a role other than being the story's trans community spokesperson.

The OP image pretty much gave us enough hints that Claire has a dick.
This is coming from a webcomic that has tons of autonomous bots from a lowly toaster, to a second-tier character that tried to abscond with a fuckton of money to input herself into a fighter jet. And a salesbot that once helmed a nuclear submarine and still has the launch codes for the warheads on said ship.
This is also the same webcomic where another second-tier character (in this case, the redhead tranny's brother) lost his hand in a childhood accident, and got a robotic prosthesis. With THAT level of tech, one would be not wrong in assuming medical advances in the QC Universe would mean that pretty much a good part of the human body can be replaced.
Add the Space Station Arc and a few other things here and there, and the QC universe is decades ahead of us technology wise.

The comic has always catered to its audience. Back when it was written for geeks, indie music people and hipsters, and it still is, but LGBT and then Trans have become huge in this social sphere, especially online so he added LGBT characters and now a trans Character to appeal to that demographic. I don't get why this is such a shock, the comic has never pretended at being anything but mildly humorous slice-of-life wish-fulfillment twaddle.

The reason you have better SRS is that people are generally more accepting of transpeople, so that there is more being invested into that kind of research. It's not a Civ.style techtree where tech just moves "forward" to a predetermined destination; what direction it takes depends instead on our goals and values. I think there's media out there trying to be progressive about the LGBT thing, but honestly, if you want to normalize stuff you have to depict in a way that's sort of normal.
The trans thing, for example. What's true about is:
1. We don't yet understand how it happens.
2. We can't properly examine the brain for any mental concern, whether the problem is emotional or about self-perspective.
3. We can't treat it, assuming it needs treatment.
4. Surgery may not help at all. It's not proven to help. Some doctors thinks it makes things worse.
5. Even meds may not always help. It relies a lot of self-reporting, so if somebody miscalculates they could get started on a dangerous path of body-alteration that isn't actually the help they need.
But then you get stuff like this comic where a trans character is totally well adjusted, has no problems at all, and just knows for damn sure what she wants and who she is. There's none of the actual conflict of being trans in the trans character.
Why don't writers go through the trouble to show their LGBT characters fighting with their lovers, flirting when maybe they shouldn't, questioning their life trajectories, and all the mess everybody else goes through regardless of gender and orientation?
