There is a reason why it's not considered an illness anymore and that's because there have been enough studies to show that's it's probably a combination of genetics and enviroment (biologically speaking; there are no clues on social conditioning). People with the capacity of rational thinking are gonna get the message.

The gay liberation movement started with the stonewall riots by gay white men and their natural allies, trans women. Lesbians high jacked it.
Gay men, kicked out of their homes, move into ghettos. They transform those areas into great places to live forming gayborhoods which lesbians and straight families flock to because they are safer than the surrounding city.
Gay men start marches protesting injustices. They get hosed and attacked by dogs. Lesbians join the fun when the marches become parades.
Gay men elect gay politicians like Harvey
Milk who fight for gay rights.
Gay men form the modern gay rights movement naming it the GLBT. The same feminists who 20 years ago wanted to have gay men arrested now have been filled with lesbians and they fight to change the letters so lesbians come first.
Gay men and trans women fight for health care reform. Homosexuality no longer deemed a mental illness, lesbian feminists fight to keep transgsexuality a mental disease. Gay men change modern health care and treatment of diseases but where unable to help trans women get their surgeries because of the efforts of lesbian feminists.
Gay men and trans women fight for the representation of gay and trans characters in media so people know that they are not stereotypes. Tumblr starts making the trans movement a joke as waves of cis women pretend to be non-binary, gender queer, or demigirls.
