as you suggest it could be in part to the more rigidly defined gender roles giving AMABs less leeway, but at the same time another explanation for why there are more MtFs than FtMs is that if prenatal neurological wiring is thrown out of kilter by hormonal imbalances, it's more likely to swing towards the female end of the spectrum given the fact that, y'know, childbearing women are pumped full of female hormones.

And remember most studies about ftm to mtf only consider numbers of people who have gone through SRS. And quite frankly, MTF srs is a lot more developed than FTM.
