You don't need a degree for CNA. Ask around at some nursing homes. Maybe the reason for the 6 month contract is because of licensing issues? I'm a mechanic and you need 3 years of experience to go from apprentice to journeyman, similar to going from CNA to LPN. You can bypass 2 of the 3 years for mechanical journeyman licensing by having 100+ hours of class time. My mother and sister are nurses so I know a bit about that. I'm 100% sure that I get paid for 2 weeks to take some classes at a nursing home and then go under a 6 month contract and at some point there, I believe after the 2 weeks because you cannot legally do work as a CNA without the certification, you get the CNA license. I was told that you get the certification after the 2 week course, but I never actually got the thing. I believe the LPN takes a minimum of 6 months of class, and the RN takes minimum 2 years, but it depends in some way on how much class time you have for LPN. I think the full RN requires 4 years class time, but can be offset by how much class time you have for LPN. ie: 2 years of LPN class means you need only 2 more years to get RN. I also believe that RN counts as a bachelor of medicine in my state, but I'm not sure of that. I am sure that you can get a masters degree in nursing after getting your RN, which is basically just a nursing specialty degree.

Skilled Care is going to expect more out of you, and they're normally so rushed you do what's dealt, plus the people are meaner because you would be if you were helpless.

I'm about 200 or so, and I do manual labor regularly. My job requires basically the same physical requirements as what you stated, but I try to avoid that kind of thing if at all possible. I would normally be required to wear steel toe footwear but I keep each individual load that I move under the requirement.
