Coil and Death In June were a big discovery for me. I always dug faggy house and black gay music in general but it was a revelation that there were cool white gays making music.
I liked the black shit because it was genuinely sexy and unapologetic, whereas contemporary gay music in my country (Ireland) is normally just "boo hoo it was difficult for me to come out". Death In June and Coil were making very sexy and very emotional music in this really unapologetic way in a time where it was actually difficult to do so for queers.
