Really depends on the guitar setup, and the strings.
When I first started I had a badly set up guitar (high action or 'string height'), and chunky strings.
Then i switched to some cheapo stratocaster with 9s on it, and the action was reasonable, and i loved it. Became much more playable, didn't hurt my fingers too much. After a few months - a year I got some gross metal jagged guitar, then a year after that a mid-range schecter, and now about 7 years after I started I pretty much exclusively play extended range guitars with thick as fuck strings and high tension. Finger pain usually isn't really a problem unless i practice a new technique in which I use fingers i didn't before, like 8 finger tapping and shit, but it really is a lot easier to get used to with a nicely set up guitar.
