Fascinating question, OP.
Etymologically, I believe "trap" is at core unrelated to transgender issues and only inherently refers to having a dick and dressing as a girl and looking enough like a girl to have a straight guy wake up with you... often after meeting at a bar. Often a young or very effective drag queen/crossdresser. In this light, it's not as disparaging, but when used to describe full-on chicks-with-dicks it can be because the "trap" is that you ended up with a guy and there's an implied subtext of it being a sinister gay guy milling around the hot dance clubs for dumb drunk straight boys. Also, chicks-with-dicks can cause offence as well.
"Tranny," on the other hand doesn't possess any such implied meaning, but it's taken as more directly offensive. Because it acknowledges that they're trans... or it... eh... sounds more catty and malicious or something, RuPaul used it and he hates everybody I heard someone say once.
I like dickgirl and trap.

trans is best as umbrella term.
trap as a word has negative connotations, but when it's used it's often used in a way that still depicts pre-/non-op transwomen as objects of desire. objectified, yes, but everyone is objectified. to be desirable is still nice.
