Mostly it's a perception thing. Most norms don't know much about lgbt issues or intricacies, so they don't see a difference between a drag monarch and a trans person. So it perpetuates an idea that trans people are doing it for fun, or a fetish. Which marginalizes the mental disorder.
Also cross dressers break down the gender divide making it harder for trans people, especially beginners from even passing as trans. Making misgendering even more common.

It isn't about insecurity at all (at least for me). It's the issue that trans is an umbrella term that people get confused about because it includes mtf, ftm, 3rd gender, non binary, genderqueer, genderfluid, and Cross dressing. and that can cause for misconceptions by those who are ignorant.
