It's because of westernization or whatever it's called due to the fact that whiter nations have dominated the world for centuries now. It's only logical that people started to associate paler skin with superiority, which ended up becoming ingrained in a lot of cultures. People of color are raised to believe that white people have a higher position in the social hierarchy (remember that blacks only got the full rights to vote around 5-6 decades ago).
That being said, with the melting pot effect we have in the US as well as other coubtires to a smaller extent, we are seeing a bit of a reversal of this trend. For what it's worth, I'm a brown dude who's into other brown guys more than white.
