I never paid attention in sex ed, and it's not like I want to sleep around at every opportunity, but realistically how do I avoid shit like HIV? The thought of having to live with it freaks my anxiety out, I can't imagine having an STD. I know the best method is safe sex and abstinence until I know them personally, but I wanted to try something maybe a couple times a year.

Fuck, how do you deal with this guys?

Condoms.

By not having sex.

Had sex once, and I thought I'd gotten HIV. Spent a whole year terrified, and the anxiety-stress was so bad I started developing actual symptoms (fever, head-aches, joint pain, insomnia, malaise) that I was sure I had HIV and was dying.

That sounds familiar

i spent 3 anxiety riddled years in fear that i had contracted HIV from a one night encounter. In the last year i had nearly every single symptom listed and was dropping weight, i was convinced that i had it.
i finally worked up the courage to get tested and it came back negative, within a week all my symptoms had gone. It's crazy what the mind can do.

Condoms remove most of the risk.
Although I asked this in a previous gaygen, are condoms not expected for oral?

Same here, Anon. I got tested this October at the LGBT Empowerment Center, came back negative.

I *had* all the symptoms, and most went away after I got the negative result. Hell, I even thought I had Karposi's sarcoma, but it turned out to just be some acne that healed and went away.

It made me realize casual sex is not for me.

Use condoms and just try and have some common sense when hooking up. If they seem sketchy or really pushy then don't do it.
Also you should ask about when the last time they were tested and such. Some people take offense to questions like that, but often that's just because they themselves have an std. If they're clean no one should have a problem telling you if they've been tested and such.

Most people don't expect for someone to pull out a condom when they're about to give/receive oral, it's mostly a porno thing. I'd suggest for people to do it though, despite how weird it'd be to suck off a piece of latex; that's what flavoured lube and condoms are for
