According to the American Psychiatric Association, until 1974 homosexuality was a mental illness. Freud had alluded to homosexuality numerous times in his writings, and had concluded that paranoia and homosexuality were inseparable. The source of promiscuity and drug abuse is most likely the result of the depression or similar issues like anxiety or stress, the brain lacks the normal level of dopamine that average folks are used to; in order to feel "normal" some people need to engage in highly stimulating activities, like drug use or sex to kick those dopamine levels back up. Similar habits occur in heterosexual individuals, people with depression who just like to "party" but we ignore them a lot because our society sees that as normal and sometimes admirable.
So basically,
