Hey /k/, I has question. What is the deal between between double action only handguns, and what are the major differences or factors involving hammers vs strikers. I legit don't get this still since I am a no-fun newfag who only has a nugget
Double action only is a heavy trigger pull that cocks the hammer back and releases it with each trigger pull. Double action/single action has a lighter trigger pull for single action, which is what every shot will be after the first, because the slide coming back, on a semi-auto pistol anyway, will cock the hammer back.
Hammer fired guns can be cocked and locked, such as how 1911's are carried, if their user wants to carry with the safety on. Striker fired pistols, such as Glocks, have an internal striker that is half-cocked when you're carrying it. Pulling the trigger finishes pulling the striker back, then releases it. Striker fired pistols can only be shot once without the slide going back, unlike DA or DA/SA pistols, which you can typically pull the trigger on again without having to rack the slide.

Single-action handguns need to have the hammer pulled back manually before each shot. Think of Old West cowboy revolvers. Double action revolvers can be cocked and fired by pulling the trigger. If you want an extra-light trigger pull using a double-action revolver, you can cock the hammer first, which gives a very light trigger pull.
A single-action automatic is like the old 1911 or Browning High Power. You have to manually cock it for the first shot, but after that the slide moving back between shots automatically cocks the hammer for each shot after that.
A more modern hammer-fired automatic like the SIG 226 or even the Walther P-38 cocks the hammer with the trigger pull. So does the Beretta 92. You could also thumb-cock the hammer for a light trigger pull if you wanted to, like with a modern revolver.
A striker-fired handgun like the Glock does not have a hammer. Like your Moison-Nagant, it uses a spring behind the firing pin to fire. Since there is no hammer to cock, it is double-action only.
Some police departments use hammer-fired automatic pistols, but absolutely forbid their officers to cock them manually and fire them single-action. They are probably afraid they will go off accidentally in a stressful situation. there are hammer-fired automatic that have had the hammer spur you could cock with your thumb removed so that there is no way to shoot them single-action..
Here is a modern exampe of DAO revolver. Hammer is shrouded so it can't be thumb cocked. Good for concealed carry. No hammer extension to catch on clothing.

Hammers take up more room, require mainsprings that take up room and are not as consistent as strikers (that's more nit-picking TBH) but you can cock them in case of a light strike, and other semi-autos can have decockers if you want a DA pull on the first shot as a halfway type of "safety"

LCR is slightly larger. LCR has a better trigger.
637 is a stainless Airweight with exposed hammer. The 642 is the hammerless stainless airweight. It allows a higher grip for recoil taming.
