At weighing 130k tons(more than a supercarrier) and possessing 8x 20 inch guns, if the Germans had built these things in WW2 they would still be afloat today and virtually unsinkable.

if the germans had seriously attempted bulding them tank production would have fallen through the floor and the eastern front wouldve collapsed

the hulls would have been bombed to scrap in their drydocks by lancasters and b-24s

if they had somehow made it out onto the ocean they woulve been torpedoed in minuites, bombed to shit in hours and if somehow they made it that far they wouldve had the entire royal and american navys assorted battleships unleashing unspeakable amounts of hell onto them

also the whole project was a hoax to spook allied naval intelligence
>>
>>29925635
1.The H-class were mostly conjectural designs. Only the H-39 was considered for production.

2.The U.S navy idea that any gun larger than 16 inches was impractical was essentially correct. Yamato's gun turrets weighed as much as a contemporary destroyer; its blast effects could tear the flesh off anyone standing within 100 feet of the guns, heart palpitations from repeated exposure notwithstanding.

3. The difficulty of manufacture of not only the guns, but of the ship itself would require that Germany halt production on smaller, more nimble craft or on fortifications. Battleships of that era took up to 3-5 years to be battle-ready on average. Yamato took around 7. This would likely be a ship 10 years in the making.

4. Where is the fuel coming from?

The Reich could have made them after the war as an expensive showpiece, but they seem like giant targets full of wasted material to me.

If I remember correctly didn't the Yamato have to center the majority of its AA in the superstructure since the pressure wave from the main guns would've fucked the guys manning the AA if they were any closer?

>What if

Jeez, I'm german and even I think that OP went full retard. Seriously, the allies wrecked our shit with the Bismark and the Tirpitz.
You wanna see what would have happened to the H-Class? Look at the Yamato.

Germany was punching above their weight - we did good but seriously: What kind of mandman thought that there was the slightest chance to win this clusterfuck against dozens of other nations?
>>
>>29930435
To be fair the Bismark would've lasted quite a bit longer if it wasn't for that lucky hit to the rudder

They would have been fucked right up by everything the RAF and USAF had to offer.

Goddamn I wish she was still afloat. Artillery fucks my ears up enough, imagine the roar of those guns
>>
>>29930685
What's your point? It was still killed through the use of strategic and tactical airpower.
>>
>>29930981
The effort to do it was gigantic though. If Germany would really consider building huge fleet during wartime as something they can achieve it it would be way harder to sink it as it would not be coffined to port and screened properly.

That's of course beyond the topic because as I've mentioned >>29930666
Germans couldn't build a warship this huge, and as other anons mentioned it would be disastrous to the rest of German armed forces, Germany didn't have enough resources to pursue construction of grand surface fleet.
>>
>>29930685
How many times was it heavily damaged and required extensive resources to repair, how much men and equipment were tied up defending it?
>>
>>29931021
Not as gigantic as the effort expended constantly having to move and hide it, repair it and defend it. Additionalky the raids on Tirpitz typically involved a maximum of 100 aircraft of all roles including ASR craft. They really were nothing special in comparison to the combined bomber offensive raids. The energy expended by the allies was much less than the germans, having to constantly move and repair the ship, while also diverting valuable resources to try and defend it.
>>
>>29928925
I see you like pissing away delta-V on huge objects.
>>
>>29930469
by lasted longer you mean, might have made it home never to sail again.

she was pinned and engaged on her first sortie, only luck meant she first encountered the only RN group she had a hope of actually beating.

the whole german surface raider concept was fundamentally flawed, sure it tied down some RN battleships but it wasnt like those ships were desperately needed elsewhere

>>29925635
>At weighing 130k tons(more than a supercarrier) and possessing 8x 20 inch guns, if the Germans had built these things in WW2 they would still be afloat today and virtually unsinkable.

if germany had even attempted the construction they would have been repeatedly bombed to shit in the yards before completion - and as a aside i dont think the krauts had a yard with space to build the ship so you have to build a yard first- the diversion of resources would have been ultimately unsustainable the war being over long before the ship was constructed.

and if by some kind of magic they built the fucking thing it needs far to much fuel and still gets knocked out in port by the RAF
>>
>>29925635

Please, it would have been severely useless.

If instead of the Tirpitz and the Bismarck the germans had built and deployed in action 80 more type VII uboot all along the year 1940 they would have had a much more serious impact than those two useless ships
>>
>>29931508
>the diversion of resources would have been ultimately unsustainable the war being over

I mean...its not as if the Germans had a lot of experience in doing such things
>>
>>29925635
Virtually unsinkable You say
Like the titanic kind of unsinkable?
>>
>>29931568
well yeah they did rather tend to plunge lots of resources into projects of dubious value, enormous railway guns, the V3 the bismarck class battleships the Maus and Ratte.

not the most practical way to run a war, although that siad they were always going to lose, but they might have lasted longer had they spent less on going full retard
>>
>>29930469
And the Hood wouldn't have sunk were it not for the lucky hit between the belt and deck armour. Almost all big gun engagements can be boiled down to lucky hits. At Denmark Strait one of PoW's shells went clean through Bismarck without detonating, if that had gone off Bis would have been a goner.
>>
>>29931547
Uboots were largely useless doe. They've stopped killing shit in 1941 only to mark record in 1942 because mr. King the self-confident American didn't listen to Brits telling him to start convoying as soon as the war has started. Then Americans started convoying shit and by 1943 it was extremely hard to cause any damage to the commerce without sacrificing your ship.

Generally building fleet was no-no for Germany.
>>
>>29931590
it didnt detonate because it didnt hot the armor, only the 20mm prow. if it had hit the armor it wouldnt have done shit.

but yeah, its all about luck, and PoW was pretty lucky her self, with a dud lodging itself right next to the boiler rooms
>>
>>29931615
>Uboots were largely useless doe
they tied up insane ammount of resources, and they were pretty fucking cheap to run too.
I wouldnt call that useless
>>
>>29931642
>but yeah, its all about luck, and PoW was pretty lucky her self, with a dud lodging itself right next to the boiler rooms

again if its fuse had worked it would likely have detonated without penetrating

Most of those were apocryphal though. The most it could do was to knock you off your feet, or so they say. During the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, some of the crews of the attacking Avengers said they could the vibrations everytime the Musashi fires her guns.

>If Germany had built X, then they would have won.

The problem with these threads is that they always ignore the fact that Germany simply did not have the industrial capacity to build these wonder weapons. So yeah, if Germany had more battleships, more tanks, more manpower, more everything, then they might have won. But they didn't. They couldn't. And now they're paying the price.

The Yamato had a lot of very poor design decisions to be honest.

>>29930435
The KM was initially told to expect hostilities in the mid 50s and had planned according. The original plans had them having 4 aircraft carriers, 8 BBs, dozens and dozens of CAs and DDs and almost 200 submarines, their plan at the time was to not just be a fleet in being but to fight the RN Home Fleet in a straight up battle and come out victorious. Instead hostilities began in the late 30s and the KM had to undergo a complete redesign and crash course.
