Springfield TRP if you can find one for that price point.
Your dad is old, he'll appreciate that it's a Springfield. And the finish is beautiful. And my God the serrations will make it feel to him like this was actually made to shoot like a mofo.

Other options are the slew of really good other-ly brand 1911s such as STI and Wilson Combat, but the manufacturer names won't strike him like a Springfield or Colt will.

Other anon's suggestion of a Colt 1911 is good as well. A plain old Colt Rail Gun might be another solid option.

He's your dad. Get him a 1911 with some Manufacturer legacy. As stupid as it sounds to us, it will actually deeply matter to him. A bad ass 1911 made by a (to him) unknown manufacturer might just seem like chink shit.

The Colt ccu is a good suggestion. You can also find les Baer premier ii in that range.

Call 1911 heaven. He has them in stock.

Get a Springfield EMP-4 and spend the rest on aftermarket parts / cool stuff

Something blued and polished, with nice wood grips, and a nice trigger. Even if it's going to actually see use, nobody ever regrets a gun they like to look at.

If your dad prefers the tacticool look, parkerized, stainless, two tone, whatever, adjust accordingly. Remember to save money for plenty of ammo and a good number of mags, because that will be more of the gift than you might expect. The longer your dad has to go without buying a new box of ammo, the more it'll be appreciated.

And consider that you can probably find a better gift by buying something preowned for relatively cheap and having a gunsmith install a nice trigger and sights for you, than by buying a brand new kitted-out 1911. In fact you'll usually find the individual upgrades are far cheaper if you install them after buying.

Seconding >>29738759 too. Not just because of the name; Springfield 1911s are reasonably priced and amazing pistols.

Colt Competition for $700 and $1000 in ammo so dad can enjoy the shit out of it. :)
>>
>>29738759
He said $1700, that and $2k more would get a Wilson.

>>29738759
The trp was at the top of my list as what I was thinking of getting

Dan Wesson Valor is in every way a better gun than a TRP, for about $1600
>>

How so?

Honestly, I don't think a TRP is something you gift someone who wants a 1911. The full-length 2-piece guiderod and 20lpi front strap checkering are two things some guys just really aren't a huge fan of.

As for the valor, DW doesn't put MIM parts in their guns so you don't have to rip out a bunch of small parts as soon as you get it. You'll find it for around $1500 in stainless and $1700 in their "duty treat" which is apparently more an actual treatment than a simple coating. They make also sell a 1911 with a rail (and magwell) they call the specialist for basically the same price, but I've never handled it.

I'll look into that thanks

Also, if you are looking in that price range, you could also pick up a Les Baer Concept, they're tight fit, but excellently made.

I second the Springfield TRP.

It looks like a hell of a lot of gun for $1,500.

So you are going to lie to your father? You do realize the springfield of today is an importer of shit guns that happens to have a pro shop that hand builds mid ranged 1911s...

Don't tell me you actually think springfield has anything to do with the... oh god you do... you think it's the same government armory...

Enjoy your brazilian, Croatian, Chinese (where else have they imported from in the past?) Rebranded turds that are marked up and used in marketing campaigns with the red white and blue.
>>
>>29741229 hey thanks for your suggestions.
>>
>>29741229
Springfield 1911s are some of the best guns you can get in the $800-$1500 range. All of their forgings are US now, the fit and finish are great for mid range 1911s. The only guns they import now are the XD line. Their support and customer service is top notch. Plus the SACS is really quite good with their prices, quality of work, and turnaround time, if that's what you're looking for.

>>29738535
Maybe you should get him a son who isn't a dissapointment instead
>>
>>29739604

Agree get the Valor.
>>
>>29741229
good suggestions but OP is looking for something more like a nice 1911 for a $1700 budget for his father, as a nice Father's Day gift

What do you think about the Dan Wesson suggestion

+1 for a Dan Wesson 1911. Fit and finish on my Heritage is flawless. The Valor has a different finish, an added rear night sight, stippling on the front strap, and nicer stock grips than the Heritage.
