That coating doesn't last for more than a few shots anyways, after which you still get spall. Why not just buy ceramics in the first place? Armorwear plates are $150, Skd $180, bulletproofme $200. Ceramics aren't that fucking expensive

Actually "level III" AR500 plates are defeated by 55gr m193. Run of the mill, very common very cheap 5.56 will punch through it. As will a bunch of high velocity hunting rounds. "Level IV" AR500 sorta almost performs on par with level III ceramics, at the same price but are way heavier. AR500 plates also aren't NIJ certified, at best they're "independently tested" meaning they meet part of NIJ level III or IV criteria, but not enough to actually get NIJ certified. There's really no point in getting AR500 plates. I say this as someone who bought a set without bothering research it, now they get taped to the back of my car's headrests when shtf.

Let's say I don't have friends nearby, I am bugging in, and there is an armed group (4-6 people) trying to bust into my home.
Now, plate carriers have mobility in mind, but as I am just defending my home, I can afford to sacrifice mobility for larger protection.
How heavy is an average plate? Can I make a full "plate armor" that covers my body without over-encumbering myself? Maybe leave the arms out so I can actually aim, but small and large plates would cover from my neck down to my knees (unlucky if I get shot in the head; that's life).
If you think my idea is retarded, please be kind enough to explain why.
