Not the point. The idea isn't even strictly wild west, ideally it would be a fantasy setting heavily based in history. The idea of lawless sparsely populated areas in russia during the russian revolution also kind of intrigues me as a sort of a wild west. Cossacks with mosins, Berdan rifles, Nagant revolvers and Smith and Wesson model 3s (and of course obrez's)

Even the reactionary stuff like Unforgiven is by definition a product of that back east whitewashing.

Fucking thank you. These guys were no different than street thugs today. A bunch of assholes that do brutal, horrible shit to undeserving people and die then uselessly, usually for a lot less money than an honest person would make with a normal life. That guy Miller in the pic on the far left killed a ton of people for a couple thousand dollars and ended up hung in a barn next to a horse. What a life. Fuck him
>>
>>29482668
Seriously what even is the point of fingerless gloves? You don't get the protection of full gloves, they normally aren't cut enough to the point where you should even be pulling the trigger at with your finger, they don't keep you warm
They literally serve no niche

Damn straight.
Colt made a lot of mistakes on his first design.
He went bankrupt from it too.
But he learned from its flaws and that's why the gun looks so unusual now.

DO read Green Blood.
The art and storytelling is incredible, and I never would have expected a Japanese to portray the historical context and weapons so accurately.
The Winchester 1866 doesn't even make an appearance until AFTER 1866.
It's more historically accurate than damn near every Hollywood and spaghetti western ever filmed.
>>
>>29482709
Well to be completely fair a couple thousand was a shit ton back then. Even more if you grew up poor.

Also I don't see any reason why you couldn't be a gunslinger without being a thug. Just go after bounties or act as a vigilante if your settlement is being fucked with.

It was a lot, but my point is he died in a barn for it. That's also all the money he made during his career. Would you chance being strung up for $500,000? How about over a ten year period?

As for the line between vigilante/bounty hunter/thug, there was no line. If you killed people back then it was for profit and you were a thug. Bounty hunters today have an air of semi-legitimate criminals, and they arrest people. These guys were ambushing people in the street. And not in coordinated super tactical attacks but straight ambushes, letting bystanders fend for themselves. Imagine if Dogg the bounty hunter was doing drive-bys. Jim Miller, the guy I was talking about before, was exactly that. He became a Texas Ranger after he started being a hitman. He had already been a sheriff and developed a reputation for killing suspects pretty needlessly, and he had had this whole blood feud with another sheriff. They still put a badge on him.

I wouldn't call modern bounty hunters criminals. They're basically just a PI only their sole suspect are someone who skipped out on bail. They just sit around staking a place out for most of the day, call people the perp knew, go through the guy's records, and from there it usually just ends in the guy talking the runner down. It very rarely ends in bloodshed. Granted some may or may not be more aggressive than others depending on state and local laws, since the laws on bounty hunting differ from state to state. But that's just semantics and doesn't really have anything to do with the point you're making.

I'll defer to you on your knowledge of frontier bounty hunters though, since I don't have any knowledge on the subject. If what you say is the case, then it certainly is far less glamorous than its made out to be in movies and literature.

I should note I never was disagreeing with you that being a gunslinger actually was pretty shit (unless you were just someone who dicked around and practiced quick drawing/speed shooting all day to get to movie tier levels but never did anything with it), I was just saying that it wasn't completely illogical as to why they did it.

replying to my own post, but if you want to see the wild west of today check out Cartel Land on Netflix. Follows the Mexican vigilante group the Autodefensas as they retake their area from a cartel. You can see in that how blurry the line between vigilante and thug is. They have a different motive than the cartels, but they use similar methods

I don't think of them as such really, but they do get that aura from regular law enforcement. PIs used to get that too but I think Sam Spade helped make them cool lol

And you're right, I can see the justification for them then, but for people like Miller it seems like it was more of a hobby turned career

He did have an interesting life though. In that blood feud he was ambushed multiple times and shot multiple times, but survived because he wore a giant metal plate under his clothing. At one point the other guy shot him in the arm, the leg, and four times point blank in the chest while he was on the ground, but the plate saved him.
