Hello /k/

I'm in the market for my first centerfire rifle, at or around $1000 (give-or-take some). What would be some good options? I was leaning more towards autoloading rifles, but I was also interested in a few bolt action rifles as well.

I'm in a bind, I have a couple days to pick it out, and I've been searching around. People are constantly telling me to get a basic sporter AR-15 or Mosin Nagant, but I want something that is a bit nicer overall.

What will be your primary use for it?

AR-15 is a good choice. For $1000 you don't need to get a basic sporter, you could get a PSA lower and BCM complete upper with a KMR or a rail system or something.

Well bolts are great because they are cheap. I would recommend something in 30 Cal to get rid of the flinch, SMLE, Yugo or T*rkroach Mausers, Finnish Nuggets things of this nature. Plus if you spend 300 bucks on let say an SMLE you have 700 bucks for Ammo and some other stuff. There arent many Milsurp semi-autos you can get for cheap other then the Hakim(or the SVT if you are a Canadian)
But if you want a more modern semi-auto and alot of ammo. Then go with a Budget AR like Rugers AR-556 or a Newer WASR AKM. There are also Lever action rifles, Like Rossi and Uberti. If you want to keep it on the cheap get a Rossi M92 in 357 Magnum/38 Special.

I would recommend something like a Tikka T3 in .308 if you want a bolt gun. They run around $700 new.

If you want something semi auto, it's hard to go wrong with an AR. Either build one yourself or if you can't be assed to do that buy a complete from a reputable company. The Colt 6920 retails for about $950 NIB.

You could buy a basic ar like an m&p sport or ruger 556 and upgrade it as you see fit. One of those would leave you with money for an optic, as well as some left over for ammo, mags and new furniture.

Competition and just general target shooting. Maybe varmint hunting in the future.

How's the FN 49

My LGS has a couple in good condition, both in 8mm.

Great Guns, tend to be a little pricy.

if you want to have /fun/ get a cheap AK and beat the living shit out of it

$1000 can get you a WASR 10 and enough ammo to last a few trips

Tikka T3x Stainless in .223
>>
>>29431922
.270 is flat shooting and can hunt anything in north America. It has vast range of bullets available and is very accurate at long range.

You don't know this?
>>
>>29431932
They are 22LR guns and not CF and good luck on reloading rimfire....
>>
>>29431940
I am awear of this, but for Varmint hunting?
>>
>>29431951
It escapes me what the full size CZ rifles are called though. That's what I'm suggesting.

I just can't remember for the life of me.

If he is in the market for a nice CF with glass and reloading tools he can get a good .270 setup if he shops carefully.

.243 would be my varmint choice but if he is buying one CF rife I'd make it a bolt .270.
>>
>>29431890
Why not?

.270 id a bit expensive and not nearly as common as .223. For competition shooting, I'm looking more at 3gun (since I already have a shotgun and handgun that were gifts).

>>29431932
CZ 527?

>>29431939
I'm talking 3gun shooting/NRA high powered rifle, not precision.

Learn to reload.
>>
>>29432009
Can't reload in a college dorm.

Suggestions depend on class. Personally, I'll shoot Heavy Metal (AR-10, Maverick 88, & a 1911) or Tactical Optics (AR-15, Mossberg 930 SPX, & a Glock 17)
