>Hammer or no?

what are your preferences /k/?

Bought a G30s about a year ago and am looking to buy a wheel gun for fun/carry. Been looking into a LCR and a SP101, heard the LCR is harder to handle in .357. Also looking into a 2 inch Chiappa Rhino.

For a .357 carry/CCW gun I would go with
-SP 101, I prefer the 3 inch, but the 2.25 inch one is just as fine. They also have a 3 inch GP 100 but that would work better with a larger barrel.
-S&W model 19/66(60's are stainless) they have with 2.5 barrels. Lovely fucking wheel gun.
-S&W model 686(586 2.5 are hard as hell too find, they have for like a grand the 3 inch performance model of it) in 2.5 and 3 inches barrels.

For .38 specials go with a 2 inch model 10 or 15. After that a .36 or aluminum 37.(both also come in 3 inch barrels and those are actually pretty good) Also the 38/49 body guards are great, basically a 36 but with a shoruded hammer that can still be single actioned but can't pocket snag. Also Colt Detective specials are amazing. Getting mine in soon.

Also I like them but some are
Mixed is the Charter arms Bulldog, in .44 special. Can be gotten cheap but only get the older or new classic style ones.
>>
Borrowed my father's hammer less Sp101 to try out. Like it alot. Might get an sp101 hammered, or an LCRx if I'm feeling cheap. Recommendations?

For a well priced SP I say look at Grab a gun. They also do layaway, but if your in Texas expect a sales tax.

Forgot too mention. While CDS can be costly now(happened too get mine for 450, you can find Colt Agents(basically what the 37 is too the 36 for S&W) normally for 350-550.

God fitzed revolvers are aesthetic.

my desire to have one is only outweighed by my desire to not shoot myself in the leg.
>>
>unironically carrying outdated 19 century crap

There is no reason to carry a revolver in 2016. They are absolutely inferior to semi autos in every way.
>>
>>29418148
I'm going to catch hell for this but,

>I carry a Taurus 5 shot ultralite with a semi-shrouded hammer

It is reliable, it's accurate enough (2" 5 shot group at 10 yds, 6.5" at 25 in my hands), and it is nothing special, so I'm fine with it ending up in an evidence locker.
I trust it to not fail me when I really need it.

Also, the ability to cock the hammer if I want but still have it shrouded to prevent snagging if I have to shoot through my jacket pocket (whick is what this gun is for) is nice.

No pictures of just the revolver on my phone but here it is next to my 65-2 in the kydex holster I made.
>>
>>29418148

I'd stay away from .357 out of a J-Frame or similar. It's marginal benefit at best for something that's basically unshootable at any reasonable speed (not to mention flash, blast, etc.).

You have a 30S which is definitely a functional belt gun. I'd look for something that's going to work in a pocket, belly band, ankle, tucked in shirt, etc. to give you more options. That rules something like a SP101, a 2" K-Frame, or a Detective Special out in my opinion -- none of those work as pocket guns in most pants, though they'll work in some jacket pockets.

I'd get a S&W 642-1. New production, no lock. LCRs have decent triggers but I REALLY hate that false reset they have. If you can work around that, they're not a bad choice either. Stay away from Charter, Taurus, and Rossi.

Load it with 148gr wadcutters, 110gr DPX, 110gr+P Critical Duty, or 135gr+P Speer Gold Dot. Dry fire regularly. Crimson Trace grips can be a very good thing with these.

I was thinking about a Smith and Wesson 638 aka the bodyguard aka the one with the shrouded hammer.

Having the hammer covered so it won't snag on things but still accessible in case I want to shoot single action strikes me as the best of both worlds and I don't even mind the weird hunchback look.

Any one have any experience with one? Specifically how difficult is it to pull the hammer for a single action shot and how hard/dangerous is it to let the hammer back down on a live round ?

hammer

for pocket carry a 2" barrel and small frame is necessary. get a pocket holster to keep the trigger guard covered and the gun properly oriented.

IWB and OWB can accommodate a medium size frame and 3" or 4" barrel.

shoulder holsters can comfortably hide up to fuckhuge sized frames and 6" or longer barrels for vertical orientation. horizontal only up to 4"

for a first revolver I'd recommend a medium frame 4" barreled .357 with adjustable sights made by S&W or Ruger.
S&W 19, 586, 66, 686
Ruger Security Six, GP100
easy to find, good quality at an affordable price, plenty of concealment options, comfortable and fun to shoot, plenty of cheap practice ammo and respectable defense ammo options

even for pocket revolvers I'd never go hammerless. again I use a pocket holster but I've never had the spur catch the pocket on a practice draw, from jeans or slacks.
the only time I got a snag was when testing how well it would work drawing from an inner jacket pocket.

Not bad, I carry a 2'' Taurus 605 .357/.38 with a Barsony leather iwb holster. It's all I have for ccw right now, so I gotta work with what I got. It's reliable, I need to practice with it more though. I'm small as well and it conceals well at 4 o'clock.

Disclosure: I worked as a rangemaster for a year and a half.

TL;DR: I think the odds of getting a lemon are greater with those brands, both from internet reports and my own experience. If you get one that works, awesome.

My own observations:
- I owned a Taurus 638 clone that worked well for the 400 or so rounds I shot through it. No complaints. Sold it to a friend who also has no complaints.
- I've seen a Taurus 605 spit lead out of the box, a gun that the customer had bought that day from us and was doing their free hour on the range with. The gun was out of time from the factory.
- Seen the same with a Rossi.
- Have seen a Taurus ultralite .357's internal lock activate on the line (that was an interesting gun to mail back to the mfg...).
- Have seen a Charter Arms that wouldn't regulate out of the box with 158gr LRN .38. The gun shot 6" high at 7yds from a rest, on single action. I and another competent shooter shot the customer's gun to confirm that.

Other:
- Charter Arms has a long reputation as low quality. Supposedly their new guns are better.
- All three manufacturers have crept up into the $300-350 range for their various models. When the known quality guns are ~$400 (can get 642-1s NIB for less than that nowadays), it's really not much of a question for me to spend the extra $100.
- IME at the shop, Taurus's customer service is a pain in the ass to deal with. Combine that with a greater report of lemons and it's more likely I'd come into contact with them.

Different guns it can be, but .357 from a snub can be less harsh then .38 from a LCR, a lot of people normally carry .38 hollow points +P in their CC .357's. Worked for the FBI and DEA.

In my experience, contact shots weren't the issue -- and frankly, they shouldn't be if you're shooting from a retention position (which you should be at very close range). Malfunctioning sims guns (out of battery, failure to cycle -- very low-powered ammo) yes, but I didn't experience that in my evos.

Considering nobody shoots on handed anymore being a left is arguably better for revolver once you get the cylinder open. That means you retain in with right digits through the gun while your more adept hand does the reload.

Just go for it man

I agree with this, I'm right handed, and I shoot a good bit with my left hand all the time.

Wrong, semis can't do it 100% RELIABLY, but it can be done.

Pocket and contact shots are still nice pros though.

It's possible. There are 318.9 million people in the USA but I doubt it.

Same. Little J-frames and LCRs arent rhat noticeable ,they make great getoffme guns, backups or God forbid you have to arm another person in an awful situation it's still an option. Obviously it's not something every person will feel is needed but if someone can comfortably and consistently do it, then why the hell not.

>no reason

Sounds like anti-gunner logic. How about because I choose to?

>inferior to semi autos in every way

Except no possibility of a magazine related malfunction. Or a failure to feed. Malfunction drills is pull the trigger again. Most people will never need their defensive gun, and even fewer will fire more than a revolver holds. A revolver works just fine in 2016 as a typewriter does to write a letter. If that's your thing and you aren't autistic about it, go ahead.
