Is 24 a good age to start a career within the Royal Marines? Apparently after 2 years as a GD marine you get pinged into a specialization that the corp needs, is it possible to choose one you actually want to do?

Are you fit?

Are you *reeallllly* fit?

You can't ever be fit enough.

>After two years as General Duties Marine developing a range of commando skills, you will then train in one of the specialist jobs. These include Metalsmith, Assault, Engineer or Mountain Leader. Display your leadership potential and you’ll start moving up the ranks. And when you show the right commitment, skills and academic ability you could also have the chance to become a Commissioned Officer at any point in your career.

People have passed the course at the age of 30+, its all down to grit, determination and preparation. As for a specialisation you will need to ask for it, they won't force you into being a cook or something.

Some are, passing the Commando course means they can skip P-Coy and go onto Parachute training if they apply for it and get a slot. Those heading for the SFSG will certainly get their wings.

I thought you could choose your own specialization

Not always, They can choose for you if they are desperate

24 is young, but still not the elastic, energetic thing you were at 18, especially if you've been growing fat behind a desk in the interim. I suggest you prepare yourself by running your fucking ass off.

Average age to pass UKSF selection is late twenties to mid thirties, and people pass in their forties. They've already shagged their bodies for years in the Paras or RM, usually on actual deployments. If they can do Endurance after 4 weeks of beat up, you can most certainly pass CTCRM up to the 32 years old cut off point with relatively little effort. It's not as wearing as P Coy either, it's more about your ability to withstand low-moderate level discomfort for days/nights/weeks as opposed to withstanding moderate-high level discomfort for the duration of a few individually murderous events.

I'm not really talking about fitness wise, I'm curious about career wise as by the time I can get into a good specialization and be a corporal I'll be nearly 30 or more.

Are you planning on doing something specific post Corps? Does that something have a cut off age? If not, why are you worried about your age? You'll have to do your GD whether you join at 20 or 24 or 30. If anything, time seemingly goes past faster when you're older anyway. GD is pretty much non existent now anyway, and most people go straight to trades. If you're unlucky enough to get pinged into a trade (people only get pinged into unpopular ones) then you'll be given preference when you want to reclass later on. If you do well throughout RT you'll have less chance of getting pinged into a trade you don't want anyway. So consider it an incentive.
