Does anybody have a real /knife/ collection on /k/ besides me? This is a small sample of what I have, AMA.

From L-R (Top to Bottom)
1. Spyderco Sage 2
2.Spyderco H1 Pacific Salt
3. Spyderco M390 Carbon Fiber Military
4.Old school Opinel (no ring lock)
5. Kabar USMC
6. Spyderco Domino
7. Benchmade limited edition 556, M390 # 172/200
8. Benchmade 710 M390-2
9. Benchmade 51 Balisong

This is just a sample of what was close to me. Feel free to ask for more /knife/ porn, I probably have it.
>>
< INB4 do you use these

All of my blades are users. I just sharpened up the serrated Pacific Salt tonight, push cuts phone book paper.
>>
Why did you get the salt?
>>
>>28364777

My father is retired and owns a cabin cruiser boat (for those that care), he lives on it. I bought the Pacific Salt many years ago for Xmas for him as he cruised off...

...

Most online advice said to get an H1 (alloy) blade, preferably serrated blade. He beat this knife up for a year, said he used mostly the chisel ground tip. The serrations were a hindrance, I gave him a few more "boat knives".

A few years ago he gave it back to me when I visited him in the San Juan islands. I just sharpened it up tonight, it push cuts newsprint easily. It has the pined construction that I prefer on these, no liners, and is very light weight and totally rust proof.
>>
>>28364903
** pinned construnction.
>>
Here is my favorite Spyderco Salt knife, an H1 Ladybug that I carry most days. Here it is next to a Himalayan International M-43.

I love this small knife as it cannot rust, sharpens easily, and is very knife friendly to people that wouldn't typically (use) or carry a blade.

Here is a Mora that I refinished the handle on, very nice patina IMO on the blade. If you do not own one yet..... get one. The knife next to it is a Spyderco Military with CTS-XHP blade transplanted onto the black handle.

Yes, I have the black coated blade mounted in the (brown) handle that it came off of.

bretty gud.

It's a 3/32'' thick blade, and VG-10 is a good steel - makes a great slicer. Plus, it's really light, though I can think of more comfortable knives.

what 4?

No, seriously, that's an important question. For every day carry, you probably want a folder that's sheeple-friendly (ie doesn't scare them fragile soccermoms and whatnot), or possibly a small fixed blade (if it's no big deal to carry).

Also - what's your budget? Is 80 bucks too costly? How about 40? 160? There are many different knives in all the price brackets.

As a rule of thumb, I'd advise to look at the steel - 154CM and D2 are very decent steels, so is 1095 high carbon steel. Above that you have powder metallurgy "super steels" (s30v, s35vn, elmax, cts-xhp, s110v etc.). Also made in china isn't terrible, but should warrant further investigation.

Some good options:

Kershaw (esp. those made in the USA)
Spyderco
Benchmade (or it's cheaper, sister brand, HK)
for fixed blades esee, maybe tops (tops has some nice designs, but what kills it for me, is the fact that you can get an LT Wright at the same price - around 120-170 dollars).

Condor ain't bad (Alan won Alone with a condor kukri).

For the most part I just carry old-guy tier knives around.

Some examples include:
>German k55k
>victorinox pioneer + a shit ton of red scaled ones
>case pen knife and stockman (delrin and jigged red bone)
>buck 110
>leatherman supertool
>falcon manual stiletto

And a couple newer ones:
>spyderco delica in blue (it looked darker in the photos)
>Benchmade mini-grip

I don't really have anything ridiculously special, but I'm quite happy with what I've got.

Without spending crazy money on diamond compounds, the good green compound works amazing. DO NOT buy the cheap shit they sell at hardware stores, wtc. Good chromium oxide compound is 0.5 micron, the stuff I use is probably closer to 1 micron.

http://www.dlttrading.com/dlt-standard-double-sided-leather-paddle-strop-sharpening-kit

This is what started me off. The black compound gives a really nice coarse edge that I love on larger fixed blades.

This stuff works better than the black compound IMO which I believe to be in the 10 micron area, and you can smear some (let it dry first) on any piece of wood and have a decent strop (MDF or balsa or wtf ever).

Costs less than ten dollars at any big box near you.

Oregon here. We have very loose laws regarding knife carry, some cities (Eugene etc) have stricter laws within the city.

For the most part every "gravity knife" can be carried, balisongs and double edged or automatic knives. All you need is a pocket clip or a sheath visibly displayed. Which is everything but....

IIRC the blade length is under 3" for a concealed fixed blade carry. Unless the cop is trying to stuff you for other reasons, it is legal here and I would imagine the same in WA. The Izula gets around this law at under 3", and is a great edc.
>>
>>28375930
Let us not forget the amazing properties of the 1095 steel, the heat treat is fantastic on these. If you use it daily, a quick stropping is all you need to bring back the edge.

I already figured it out anyway.

Apparently my grip when opening right handedly was right on the liner lock, entirely canceling out the force of my opening it with my thumb.

Wish I figured it out sooner cuz my thumb hurts like hell.

Looks nice, maybe turn on some lights more than your camera flash next time so we can see some more of the details of your knives :)

Probably a noob question, but I don't know much about knifes besides the ones I have.

Where can I get a usable, good quality Fairbairn-Sykes knife?

It was developed with Coast Guards in mind. If you're going to be doing similar tasks to them, then I assume it'd be great.

William Rodgers Sheffield still makes the 3rd pattern knives. Depending on where you are, just look for one of those. I know Lamnia.com carries them if you're in the EU, though their prices are really high. I'm sure there are others as well.

fuck serrations in general, i have a semi serrated blade (yeah only one it was an accident too, never gonna buy an other one either) there are very specific things i use the serrated part mostly cutting hard plastic stuff that is way more difficult to cut safely with a straight blade.

Hey /k/ommandos:
I am looking to buy a credit card knife. A knife I can put in My wallet and always have with me.
I dont have too much experience with knifes outside of cooking.
Looked around and found 2 potential candidates:

CardSharp:
>actually looks like a creditcard, cool!
>pointy tip
>doesn't seem to have a comfortable grip, just look at the pic
>weird fold-up pattern with slide-locks. doesn't seem too convenient

Böker Plus Credit Card knife (also known as Creditor II by Kubasek)
>wtf is up with those two, look identical, did someone copy it from the other?
>looks more durable and comfortable to hold
>has a detachable clip
>doesn't look like a creditcard
>no pointy tip, more like a quartercircle, probably not good for cutting stuff that is best poked first (large hard vegetables for example)
>easy flip-out

Anything I missed? Are there other good alternatives?

The CardSharp is either made of plastic - which is unreliable and easy to break - or metal - which is expensive. Also, the deployment is probably the slowest I've seen in a knife.
The Boker Card Knife, on the other hand, is just really a thin traditional pocket knife. Better locking mechanism and faster deployment.
I'd recommend the Boker.
It's gonna be in your wallet anyway, who cares if it looks like a card or not? Besides, you won't be taking it through security.

But thats a fake.

I would just carry a small neck knife or those firecracker otfs than that piece of shit.not only is it unreliable but it takes time to open it.

I have a Necknife, problem is the plastic sheath broke and you can't flip them in so you always need to carry the sheath with you.
I don't the knife to be an additional Item I need to carry with me, one that I can have with me without thinking about it.
