my buddy mentioned he preferred revolvers because the added recoil from the ejector messed with his aim. i'll have to try my picks out at the range to see how i handle it

Normal citizens simply do not get permits. They're for multimillionaire donors to the Sheriff's re-election campaign or politicians with enough juice to sway the sheriff or police chief. I strongly recommend you keep a can of bear spray strength prison mace handy in your backpack.
An unlicensed gun should be very last resort since any defensive shooting will result in you being raped in the ass for carrying a loaded gun on a public road without a permit, concealing a gun without a permit, and other charges.

What? If anything the slide helps dampen and smooth out recoil.
That said I like revolvers because DA/SA makes it so that you can effectively have a very light trigger (once you cock it) while also not risking it going off in your pocket.
There are semis with good triggers too of course, but there's just something about a good revolver imo.
Also, if you're in LA, you'll be lucky to get a permit to carry a squirt gun full of lemon juice.

Since concealment is primary and you have the fucking roster to deal with I'd say Glock 26 or S&W Shield. Both are fairly easy to shoot, inexpensive to practice with, and reliable.

Maybe that'll swing it in your favor but a gun at home isn't really going to help you if you are being accosted three miles away by a yout.
There's multiple schools of thought in regards to carrying but a snubnose in .44 is pretty good if it is guaranteed there will be close quarters grappling as a semi might have greater issues if you press it up against something, say a seat or a person and it goes out of battery.

i have a 3' knife in the car but it doesn't sit right in the hilt it folds into so i can't draw it quickly. i'll look into one better. bear mace sounds like a good idea too.
