I live in an urban center and need some means of harrassing some groundhogs that are digging holes and eating lettuce in my neighborhood.
What do I need to know? I haven't shot guns for a long time, and I never had a bb/pellet gun when I was a kid.

You could use a large-ish PCP air gun? I watched some groundhog hunting on Youtube and the fella was using a .22 or .25 PCP. I'm Aussie so I don't shoot groundhogs so I don't know much about shooting them.

You'd have to get some sort of .22 or even .25 caliber gas-powered gun. You're garden-variety springer pellet gun wouldn't do the job reliably.
You could just get American Rimfire, feed it subsonic .22lr, and put a suppressor on it. It'll barely make a sound and definitely won't sound like a gunshot.

Groundhogs are pretty beefy for rodents (4-9 lbs average, but can get bigger). I would think you'd need a fairly powerful air rifle or a .22 LR to kill one. I'm not sure how tough their hides are, a weaker BB/pellet gun could either leave a bruise or not penetrate deeply enough to be lethal (leading to a slow painful death by infection). A big fucker might not even give a shit and just come back when you're not around. None of this answers your question, but it's something to consider.

Yeah, BB gun isnt strong enough, plus townships tend to have a "no discharge of projectile weapons" that includes things even as stupid as airsoft.
If you want to be a man about it, take a hunters' safety course, get a general hunting/trapping license, trap it, take it out to your closest gamelands, kill the fucker by shooting with real gun or stabbing it. Field dress it. Brine it. Cook it. Eat it.

Same basic principle as any animal, separate the meat from everything else by removing the stomach, intestines, and everything you don't want to be chewing, just be careful not to rupture anything.
