They're really good quality guns and put together right and now that they have a dust cover they're no real downsides.
You also might be able to get something a little cheaper/better if you get a complete upper and lower separate and assemble them but the sport 2 is a great deal for an out of the box gun.

I can't really emphasis enough how much I would recommend against a mini-14.
It would be unfair to call the mini-14 a terrible rifle it's just a very much so mediocre rifle.
It uses a neat but outdated and outclassed action, parts of lowish quality that will stand up fine to very light "ranch" use but when it comes to more stressful use its not unknown for things like the gas block to crack under rapid fire, and even after the improved version was released it really isn't a star when it comes to accuracy. Magazines are shitty to find for it and $25+ when they're on sale, not to mention finding magazines for the mini-30.
All of this while being at a price range that's inching up to a Colt Ar-15 which is by all accounts an excellent rifle.
Their is simply no reason to buy a Mini-14 unless you live in a ban state and even you should just save up for a M14. Everything appealing about the mini-14 can be found in other better rifles such as the SKS, AR, AK, and Garand.
Want a simple fudd friendly rifle? Why go with an Mini when you could get a yugo SKS for several hundred dollars cheaper and have a rifle built to stand the test of time that shoots cheaper ammunition at comparable accuracy?

barrel technically have a break in period of a few rounds to removing any left over bits from the machining but otherwise unless its a 1911 especially a tight one their shouldn't be a break in period.

WhT light get. I was thinking something sub $200, that was kinda small. If small enough I'd mount it at the 12 o'clock position infront of my BUIS with a tape switch, otherwise I'd probably do an offset on the right side witha tapeswitch.
