Guns aren't a super complex field, but It can be if you want it to. Just kinda lurk around the board for a bit. Watch youtube vids and stuff. That's what I did.
I will say that if you've never had anyone teach you the basics and you've literally never gone shooting before, take a class or something. I wouldn't rely on /k/ to teach you gun safety.

Honestly if you are looking for a way to defend yourself from gay bashers I would recommend a striker fired polymer wonder 9mm handgun for conceal carry. Glocks are boringly reliable and stupid easy to use and are fairly cheap. Look at Glock 19 or if you need it small (idk how you dress) Glock 43. If that is too far out of your budget Ruger SR9 series is good and so are Kahr CM9.

This advice is short of finding someone to help you. Get one of said pistols from above (or if not fit your fancy something in the same class, make sure to finger fuck it {see how it fits and feels in your hands} before you buy) and take it to the range, learn how it shoots and operates. Get a good holster or bag carry if you wear dresses or whatever (again I dont know how you dress). Practice at home drawing from how you carry and getting a good sight picture. Do this with dry fire drills. Practice, practice, practice. The name of the game is building muscle memory so when something scary happens you will not have to think about it.
