Don't own a weapon yet. Looking for opinions on a first rifle. Want something reliable, something to protect my family and property.
FN FAL Paratrooper model
A Mosin ;^)
SKS.

Just get an AR desu. the SKS/Mosin/Rhodesia fanboyism on here isn't going to help.
There are a shitload of parts, ammunition, and tools available for the AR. It's relatively reliable, not hard to clean or operate, and for what's available, not terribly expensive.
This will go against /k/ doctrine, but the AR is a safe bet.

I also need people's opinion I want the AK Alfa to be my first gun but I hear the price is between $1200--$1800
Is there a way for me to get a good ak with a rail, sight, foregrip, good muzzle break, all for under 1k?

How hard is it to clean an AR? How many funtioning parts does it have? I hear the AK is superior due to easy of use, and never jams

It's a myth

Maintenance is very easy.

You're not gonna be in the desert or the jungle famalam, if you're worried about parts and taking care of it just get a shotgun

M&P-15

Cleaning an AR is a breeze.
People are concerned because gas goes into expansion chamber in the bolt-carrier, but that's literally by design, it's made to handle that, you don't really need to clean an AR that often but if you're bothered by it get a Nickel Boron plated bolt carrier group, very easy to clean.

>How hard is it to clean an AR?
push a couple pins out
Bolt carrier ground and charging handle come right out
clean what you can see
>>30656659
Cool, was just looking at that.
Seeing some for $700.

This, I own the 5.56 and .22 sport 2 and really like them
>>30656645
Easier than an AK?.
>>30656648
I am gonna be in the dessert.
>>30656684
Sounds easy enough I'll watch a video to be sure though
>>30656759
A rod a few patches, a rag, oil and 15 minutes is all you need after going to the range. Don't even worry about it.

You can score one for a Benjamin or two less.

This. It's my first rifle and I couldn't be happier. Sure, no classy wooden furniture or anything but the sky is the limit with these.
>>30656818
do tell
>>30656709
M&P15 or the Ruger AR556 for no frills ARs.
I'd lean toward the Ruger honestly.
>>30656830
I'm saying you can find an M&P-15 for $500
>>30656471
Related question. What's the cheapest ar I could build? PSA always has specials on kits
>>30656830
In Ohio, prices are usually around 650. That's what we sell them for at least. M&P's aren't frilly or anything, but it's a functional rifle for a cheap price. You're only getting one PMAG and an instruction booklet in a soft cardboard box, though, so get something to keep it in.

Around 500 bucks, but shipping will hurt. You could wait for sales, but I have a feeling this year's gonna suck for sales. You will also need to invest in some tools.
I'd only recommend building if you plan on building a few (cost effective then) or if a buddy can loan you the tools.

I got the Ruger. Really like it, but honestly it seems the budget AR's are all pretty equal.
>>30656924
They probably are. I just like machined front sight block on the Ruger. Plus I like how Ruger helped fight the gun control push in 2012.
