AR-15: Build or Buy?
>>
Always build, buying's for faggots
>>
Build, I bought first one and felt dumb after learning how easy building is.
>>
build a lower and buy a complete upper from BCM
>>
>>30653669
me to, I felt like a fool after I sarted looking for after market stuff when I bought one.
>>
Built an AR for 300$ in 2011 using spare parts from other people's build kits and some machining. You will learn more about your rifle building it than you may if you buy it. The 300-AR is little more than a range-Queen because it's so cheap I wouldn't trust it in an operative enviornment...BUT

I learned enough from that experience to buy parts and assemble a much better one for about 650$ in 2014.

This. When people ask where I got my AR from I say I forged it from steel using the bodies from dead Arizonans.

AR-10 build or buy?
>>
>>30653762
buy
>>
Only buy if it's cheap enough and has the features you want. Build otherwise. Watch PSA for lower parts kit sales. Buy the upper complete if possible. At the very least get the barrel with a FSB already installed.
>>
>>30653762
Buy. AR-10s have several different specs based on different company patterns. Easy to fuck up and get incompatible parts.

That and generally less manufacturers/aftermarket mean building costs just as much.
>>
>>30653787
>Easy to fuck up and get incompatible parts
you mean "easy to accidentally start a second build"

There is the AR-10 pattern or the DPMS/LR.308 pattern. LR .308 (MATEN) on left, AR-15 on right.
>>
General consensus seems to be build an AR
Any recommendations on lowers (80% ???), parts kits, uppers, barrels, triggers, grips???
>>
>>30653803
This.
>t. Ar10 build veteran
Thank me for my cervix
>>
>>30653874
Aero Precision has the best quality bang for your buck Stripped Lowers, but the cheaper Anderson & PSA lowers are good too, just have less features.
>>
>>30653645
Either one will net you a good rifle, building gives you more knowledge.
>>
>>30653645
Building
Pros:
>get exactly what you want, no money spent on parts you will just replace later anyway
>knowing every spring and detent of a gun you own is cool
>really easy
Cons:
>not actually cheaper for a first build because you will have to buy $50-$100 in tools, depending on how well off you are on this front beforehand (torque wrench, barrel wrench, roll pin punch, vice, barrel grease etc.)
>loses resale value when compared to a completed rifle

If you know exactly what you want, build it.
If you are new to ARs/don't know exactly what you want and want to save some dosh, just buy a completed upper and lower and shoot it until you know what do want, after which you will probably end up building the rifle you want (this is a very common pattern).
If you are worried about reselling it ever, buy a complete rifle.
>>
Buy an AK.

I don't know why so many people have so many AR's, they're fucking popgun toys compared to an AK.

Look at Arsenal and DDI

Not anon but thanks. I just don't know anything about tools and equipment or can even think about affording a milling machine. My nightmare is ruining an 80 lower, I'm guessing buy a complete AR, sell it later when value goes up for tools?

>>30653787
I built mine but it was a couple months research and made the mistake of using an aero precision handguard.
>>
>>30654961
you don't have to mill anything. buy a stripped lower (requires a background check) not an 80% lower (no background check but requires milling)

Build if it's your first. You'll save a TON of money that can be spent towards accessories, optics, scopes, typical AR "honeymoon" stuff.
Buy if you've already built one. At that point you'll already have an idea of what you want or you're just looking to burn some fun money.
>>
>>30653645
Build. I bought my first and almost immediately started building my next one.

Good thing is though, now I have an AR for me and one for the girl when SHTF
>>
>>30653669
This. I had no clue people built them.
>>
Being a Califailnian I'm building an AR from one of those polymer molding kits. I'll let everyone know how that works out (still waitng on tools to be delivered.)

I just bought 15 black AWM mags ($11.60 ea) and 15 smoke AWM mags(fucking $15.30), how badly did I fuck up?,
>>
>>30655374
Sounds about the usual price for those and I've heard great things about them.

Not a great deal, not a rip off either.
>>
>>30655420
Great. Actually, coming from "collecting AK mags", these prices are pretty reasonable. What a fucking dumb thing to do, collecting magazines. At least I have plenty, I guess.
>>
>>30654678
Every American should be familiar with the military's current service rifle/carbine just in case. Most of my gun usage is innawoods so I usually bring something in 7.62x39 or .44 magnum, but an AR in 5.56 is more useful against armored targets or for people at over 200 yards.

Most gunsmithing experience I had was basic AK and nugget maintenance when I bought my first AR. A few months later I was assembling a whole other one from scratch in my grad-school apartment. It's seriously that easy.
>Never regretted buying my first, because $600 for an Armalite middy w/ Geissele FCG is a fucking steal

Buy unless you get a kit from PSA or something. I lucked out and got my PA-10 kit ($699) with keymod rail and a blem lower ($75+$25 transfer) done when they were in stock. Primary Arms 4-16 and a cheap utg bipod.
