AK. Removable magazine is standard and it's slightly more ergonomic. The one real advantage the SKS had- cost- has basically disappeared at this point.
Just buy an AK unless you have a love for history or a chance to pick up a sub $400 good condition SKS.

Why? Because removable mags are inferior to clips in most situations unless you are Rambo or something.
Russian SKSs are of better quality than even high end AKs, more accurate and have a bayonet included.
The SKS is the perfect militia rifle.

For $600-$700 either WASR or a Zastava OPAP
For $800+ a DDI or an Arsenal.
IMO the OPAP is best choice for starters because of the 1.5mm RPK trunnion. The non-chrome lined barrel is only a problem if you never clean/maintain your firearms.
Arsenals are also good because welded AKs look sexy and they make AKs in 5.45 which is also sexy
When you could get an SKS for about 120 - 150 they were choice of economy. I was never attached to the gun. From what I hear if you take the time to match ammo with any gun you'll find tighter groups. Unfortunately I never had the convenience to shoot all day to try. Therefore handling takes dominance for my personal choice, and the AK's handling over the SKS is no question. Otherwise I have no problem hitting a 12'' target at 100 meters with an ak.
