What is /k/'s drink of choice?
I've been on the rye train for about a year now. Rye and cokes as strong as I can handle them, which of course gets stronger through the night.

Craft beer. Usually from local breweries which are awesome.

Also OP if you're going to drink hard liquor get something decent so you can drink it straight. Or if you are out be able to order a cocktail that's not just "coke and my liquor of choice".

An Old Fashion or Whiskey Sour would be right up your alley.

If I ever feel like I'm going to relapse again I will try that. I've been sober about a month and a half and I haven't had the urge to drink because I've had this high on life thing going on since I have been feeling so much better.

No more jitters, I sleep much better, always in a better mood, my blood pressure has gone down... I might actually be done with the sauce for good this time.

>>
>>30652582
These days the only way to try it is to home brew it. Which is super easy, but may obviously lead to mediocre brews such as mine. Just research the recipes, and gather your equipment (I recommend homebrewsupply(do t)com) You can get some very cheap and reliable supplies from this site.). It will take some time as well as trial and error to perfect your brew. Good luck.
>>
>>30652845
That sounds like a good place. I don't drink much but had two glasses of wine for my birthday... they tasted great... but i didn't really like today. not a hang over but wasn't 100%.

There is a place in my home town that sells some pretty acclaimed mead. It's expensive but I think I might pick up a bottle.

Okay, so I'm a snob, and I'm gonna drop some knowledge here.

I'll start off with the lowdown. Mount Gay (ha, ha) is the one name you need to know in rum. Their light rums are great for cocktails, and their aged rums are excellent for sipping. Seriously, you haven't had a rum and coke (aka a Cuba Libre, with the addition of lime) until you've had one made with Mount Gay Silver Eclipse. The taste, compared to the Cap'n, Kraken, or Sailor Jerry's, is fucking night and day. Mount Gay is universally embraced by rum lovers.

Now, the dank knowledge.

Most people think rum is meh tier because they've only had spiced rums (e.g., Captain Morgan, Kraken, Sailor Jerry's) or light/flavored rums (e.g., Bacardi, or fucking Malibu). The above are only suited for sorority girls wanting to get white girl wasted.

They're bad because any flavored liquor is just bad. "Spiced" in the context of rum basically just means "flavored." Flavored liquor is bad because it comes from the distillers straight up admitting that their product is undrinkable unless you add a bunch of shit to sugar it up and mask the flavor.

Now, rum, like tequila, comes in different classes based on its color, which is related to its age, as is the case with practically all hard liquors. When the shit comes out of a still, it looks clear, like vodka, or rubbing alcohol. It turns brown from being aged in barrels. The longer the aging, the better a spirit tends to be (though that's not a hard-and-fast rule).

So you have your light (unaged) rums and your brown (aged) rums. Light/silver rums are for mixing, aged rums are for sipping neat (that is, straight up, unmixed). Some light rums are practically good enough to be sipped, but the aged rums put them to shame.
>>
>>30654014

>>30652582
Moonlight Meadery's "Sensual" is top-notch. It's fairly sweet, but it tastes amazing.
>>
Scotch.
Tequila.
Gin.
Canadian Whiskey.

In that order. I drink vodka too, but only as a mixer, and only to get drunk.

I did polish off half a bottle of Aberlour when Obama got elected the first time.
>>
>>30654014
Good aged rums give the finer whiskies a run for their money, at a much lower price point than Scotches or some bourbons. Rum has a totally different character than whiskey (mainly because it's made from sugarcane instead of grains) but it is no less refined or complex. Well-regarded aged rums include El Dorado 15, Appleton Estate 12 year, Ron Zacapa 23, and of course, Mount Gay XO.

>>30653859
>>30653904
This guy knows what's up.

Anyway, while I think rum is a sadly underrated spirit, it's not my personal favorite.

My preference: bourbon, my first and only booze-love. Four Roses Single Barrel or Jefferson's Reserve (not to mention, of course, Pappy Van Winkle) when I've got extra cash, Jimmy Beam day-to-day. Don't fucking talk to me about Jack Daniel's, because that's not bourbon, it's filthy Tennessee whiskey. Bourbon, as far as I'm concerned, only comes from Kentucky.

Around the world, the ones by Moscow Distillery Cristall and Polmos Łańcut are noice: Moskovskoya Osobaya, Cristall, Stolichnaya (although it's a bit too much of a meme), Biała Dama and Polonaise. I also really enjoy Belorussian Naliboki for being top tier and also dirt cheap, but I don't know if you can find it outside slavlands.

These ones are fine and stable. The other popular labels are risk - they tend to go up and down in quality once a year or two, so best just stay away from shit like Beloe Ozero, Russkiy Standart and the lesser shit. Nemiroff is pure meme.

Literally what? Is that a regional beverage like Cheerwine?
>>

Rye just refers to the mash used.

Bourbon means the mash is at least 51% corn.

All bourbon is a rye. Not all ryes are bourbon. Sort of like how all schotches are whiskey but not all whiskeys are scotch.

It's more like Faygo or RC. Semi regional ghetto soda with a shitty cult following

No Faygo here unless ICP is in town. >RC Cola is best cola.

If you'd be calling it a rye though, doesn't that imply that more than 50% of the mash should be rye and as such not a bourbon? Just because a mash may contain rye doesn't mean that any drink is a rye, that's like saying some vodkas can be rye because they use it in the distilling process.

I've got a real sugartooth and I have a deep love of sweet liqueurs.

Pic related with coke is what I like to sip at home in front of the computer.

These guys know what's up. Woodford Reserve for bourbon. I'm also a sucker for Olmeca Altos for Tequila, with the occasional chilled shot of Romana Black.

Beer wise, Weihenstephaner Korbinian is my preference, with a healthy amount of Yeungling thrown in because you can't always drink $4 beers.

Some vodkas can be rye. Rye is a style of mash, doesn't specify percentage of ingredients, just that it contains *some* rye and is pre fermented.

Calling rye whiskey just rye is a lazy shortcut thats been commonly accepted since it's the only drink with rye in the name even if it's only one of dozens with it in the ingredient list.

Whiskey naming conventions are convoluted and a lot aren't logical progressions.
