Why in movies the Marines are depicted as the ultimate killing machines, when in reality they are the lowest tier in the military?

The Marines, post WW2, needed to differentiate themselves to justify their existence. (After all, they are just a watered down army, pun intended).

This led to the Marines being massive propaganda whores, like on par with Stalin. Also led to them keeping the best dress uniform the US Military has ever had.

Modern day, it really just boils down to people with no actual knowledge of how the military works (Statistically, 97-98% of the population), just assume Marines=Special Operator tier. Hell there are guys in the military, Marines and Army that actually believe that.

The Line was shit, they tried so hard to force their message they had to remove all choices because when one existed play testers took the moral way out.

Then they had the nerve to call people immoral for playing the game they paid for. 'You don't have to play it' is bullshit unless they offer an unconditional full refund.

It was hanging a lampshade on contemporary milfic fps games but it wasn't actually a deconstruction. You don't need a full deconstruction of games that stupid to get the point.
>>
>>30653963
Its not great though, the developers actively set out to criticise the people who bought the game.

>>30653966
There is no point though. Not only is virtual violence completely harmless and acceptable but the playtesters proved their fucked up theory was wrong. Since they ALWAYS chose to avoid doing the things the finished game forces you to do.
>>
>>30654048
The game wanted to make you feel the consequences of war. In order to make you feel the consequences, it had to make you make 'decisions' that led to those consequences.

If the game gave the option to turn around and not continue, the game would be over.

Unless you want them to make two completely parallel games, one where the story progresses as normal and one where you turn around and go home. Which would suck.
>>
>>30654048

You have completely misunderstood the purpose of the game. You think that it has anything to do with the player, when it has everything to do with Walker. The player's role is to become more uncomfortable with Walker as they progress through the game, just like Adams and Lugo start feeling uneasy around him. One of the game directors mentioned that Walker is quite literally "in hell," like Konrad insinuated near the end of the game. As you distance yourself from Walker, you become able to pick apart more and more things that make it obvious that he is insane. (Tree being alive one second, then is dead the next. Statues of molten lava somehow standing upright, teleporting mannequins)

I mean, hell, they even chose a third person angle so that you would be "outside" of walker, instead of controlling his actions through his eyes.
All the choices in the game were ones that only walker himself were capable of in his mindset. Except the last one. That one actually belongs to the player. It basically asks, "This is the man we have shown you. What does he deserve?" Since the object of vidya is to kill the badguy, I chose death for walker. TL;DR you are a dense gaylord and you should stick to cawaduty
>>
>>30654066
>>30654120

Not him, but thats still shit.

If a game gives you no choice whatsover but then punishes you for taking that "choice" its retarded.

As he said, it would only be valuable if you had the choice to not do the horrible things, even if its harder/more challenging.

And I hate to say this, but, yknow, like Memetales. That game at least only tried to make you feel bad for shit you actively did and could have choosen not to do. Here its >You have to do thing> Waaa why did you do thing? You could have turned off the console and paid 60 bucks for not playing.

So why do the loading screens try to make the player feel bad by saying shit like pic related?
>>
>>30654142
You idiot. IT'S NOT PUNISHING YOU, IT'S PUNISHING WALKER. The player is a third party, a silent witness to WALKER'S warcrimes. The player is Walker's judge. You get to determine mercy or execution for walker.

You really are dense.
>>
>>30654209
>You idiot. IT'S NOT PUNISHING YOU, IT'S PUNISHING WALKER.
Sure
>>
>>30654142
Because Walker is telling himself that. Throughout the entire game, up until radioman, Walker keeps on saying "We can still save Dubai." This correlates with "You are still a good person." After he sees more and more hell visions, his denial starts unraveling; "This is all your fault."

I'd also like to point out that thr image you showed didn't accuse the player of anything, it just asked them "why should they care?"
>>
>>30654220
Refer to
>>30654227
Also, thats a quote from konrad. Who is in walker's head. So that just reinforces my point that walker is telling himself he is guilty.
>>
>>30654120
Then why did the developers outright criticise the players and answer criticisms with 'well you don't have to play the game you paid money for'.
>>
>>30654241
you're a fucking retard kid.
YOU CONTROL WALKER. If you think you're just watching him do shit then you've been playing too many cinematic "games"
>>
>>30654220
I wonder if the devs are happy that the game sold so poorly and so many people "won" by never playing it in the first place.

Spec ops was dogshit from a gameplay perspective and the entire story was pretentious college art student tier shit. I'm convinced that children think it was good because they've never read a novel that had more than 50 pages.
>>
>force player to do shit

>>
>>30654333

>>
>>30654195
Because they are using every part of the game to tell the story. The title screen changes with walker's mental state too.
>>
>>30654292

>>
>>30654333
It was a solid third person shooter and you know it.

You see when an author writes a novel, whether it's over or under 50 pages, it's still the vision of one man.
Games suffer from design by committee, a huge team has to construct a cohesive portrayal from a multitude of slightly differing visions.
The fact that you compare spec ops' story not to a game but to a novel is a triumph.

I understand he difference between marines and army in the UK, is it the same in the US?

Marines:
rapid reaction
specialist training in all environments
specialists in assaulting from water
traditionally use navy ships etc
Self-reliant

Army:
Grunts
each branch specialised

It seems like in the states marines are viewed as grunts and army as the intelligent ones. Any input (no bias please) ?

>It was a solid third person shooter and you know it.

From a gameplay perspective, no, it was not. Unless you consider 'solid' being that it checks off most of the check boxes of what you 'need' to have in a TPS. Even then, it's clunky, poorly designed and absolute shit. In a game that's supposed to be about OH LOOK AT ALL THESE REAL GUNS AND EVEN A SINGLE BULLET HURTS YOU SO MUCH, the most threatening enemy is the faggot with a KNIFE, thus abandoning the entire logical base they tried to build up.

>The fact that you compare spec ops' story not to a game but to a novel is a triumph.

I did not. I compared people that think it's a good story to the kinds of mouth breathing philistines that have never read anything good in their life and then pick up Twilight and think it's a great novel. Just because you've never experienced symbolism or even been bright enough to see it in video games doesn't mean that the first game you come across where you recognize it (because it throws it in your face) is good.

The fact that people actually bought into the 'you could have just stopped playing anytime you wanted!' excuse the devs threw out for why the game was bad and that there were no choices in the game at all despite acting like you actually have them is possibly the most pretentious and idiotic thing I've ever seen in my life.

I can't speak on behalf of Army infantry training, and I don't claim that one is better than the other, but I can speak on behalf of Marine infantry training.

So, of course you get the 13 week boot-camp. After that, grunts attend the School of Infantry for about 8 weeks. During SOI you get training on various weapons platforms and start doing night shoots with NVGs. It is also where you'll be separated into your actual infantry MOS. After SOI, you're sent to whatever battalion you're stationed with. As a grunt, you'll basically be out in the field training every other week. This involves sleeping out there for 5-7 days and going through various training exercises from mobile operations to demolition, basic rifle exercises to live killhouse scenarios. This goes on until your first deployment. While on deployment, it basically doesn't change much. You'll continue to train however (or whenever) you can, and it usually is even more frequent than in garrison. After deployment it's rinse and repeat.
>>
>>30657371
That's how the Army is with our 14 week OSUT
We do basic shit for 8 weeks as BCT, then move on to our AIT portion of OSUT, which is just teaching us Infantry shit where we do the same shit as you, and then in garrison we train train train (with healthy dose of janitorial duties, thanks peace time) and get to do fun shit once in awhile

And plus, we can go to a shit load of schools and qualify for a lot of things Marines don't normally get to do

This.
They are the go here and die unit. But that's a tough sale. So you gotta jazz up the pitch

A marine, a vegan, and a cross fitter walk into a bar.

I know this because they each announce it as they enter
>>
>>30657673
Paratroopers are the best example why elite =/= automatically better.

They may be trained for a very specific type of mission, but outside of that type of mission you're better off just using regular infantry.

dumbest analogy ever

heart of darkness was an exposition, not a finger wagging tale that taunted its readers for picking it up
>>
>>30657289
that might be true only if they're exposed to the same risk of casualty. I don't know shit about it but I'm willing to guess that different branches do not undertake the same tasks in the same environment with the same inherent risks.

marine infantry here. I hate it, im probably the least fucking gung ho person there. But watching army do the most basic of shit like hike or pt or do mout they dick everything up. We dick everything up but when I see other armies usually no one gives a fuck and they operate like garbage. I feel like everyone is really garbage but were slightly less garbage. Like basic logistics get so fucked up and were visibly more organized than most other armies I see and that scares me deeply
>>
>>30660471
why would the marines being more organized than other armies scare you?
>>
Military Intelligence...

two words combined that can't make sense.
>>
>>30660712
being at the bottom you see how chaotic and disorganized an organized military is so I would hate my life more if I was in some second world military

When I was in Saudi Arabia we did some joint-training with the Saudi Army. You want to know how they got on target with crew-served machine guns? They started shooting at the ground about 5 ft in front of them and worked their way up to the target. It scared the shit out us the first time.
>>
>>30649647
keeps the dumb kids joining. they think they'll be ninja snipers if they join the marines. but they end up being cannon fodder

That kind of "2deep4u" shit only works if the player actually has a choice, even fucking Undertale (meme game as it is) at least spares it's "you're a piece of shit" thing if you actually choose to kill things you don't have to.

That's exactly what he fights for! Our freedoms to be stupid and retarded every single fucking American day.

Orrrrrrrrrr you could not be a pussy and enjoy the ride. Not every bit of media needs to suck your dick and make you feel good. People like exploring various emotions. So go play Call of Duty and feel smugly superior because you "realize" that it's all fake. I pity your inability to explore different ideas.

you completely miss the point, but you are probably just a nobrains /k/ who knows nothing about anything but muh gun shoot. the whole point isnt to criticize you for forced choices, the whole point is watching the main character losing his sanity. its like a story. its too bad you aren't smart enough to even comprehend that though.
