Katana is a perfectly adequate sword, generally rather large for indoor use though, which is why Tojo carried a wakizashi too.

All else being equal though, the rapier is the superior weapon for 1v1 combat.

I'm amazed by your x-ray vision to be able to tell this.

Please, explain to me exactly how a katana forged by Steffan Roth, the only westerner to have become a member of the Nippon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai who has also spent 7 years training as a smith in Japan, is not a "real katana" when it was forged from japanese-sourced tamahagane in the traditional manner, by a recognised bladesmith?

And more importantly, how can you tell this from a , 387x217 pixel gif?

funny enough, the katana is made for quick assassination style kills, so it actually makes it pretty poor for "defense". Despite the gladius, machete, and kukri being the better weapon for combat, the katana is pretty small and light so it wouldve worked for ronin and ninjas.
Actual samurai preferred the spear and firearm on horseback and only used the katana as a last resort weapon

Katans are cool, if you like one, buy one.

Thats all there is to it.

>being a good weapon

It is a knife axe hybrid, great at killing a person just like a katana is but it isn't meant for parrying ir blocking.
>>
>>30649062

Some katanas were supposed to break. They were forged it in such a way that even when the blade split, it still retained a perfect edge. That way, when an opponent made such a powerful blow that it did break the sword, he would still be in for a deadly surprise. This was also what lead to the creation of the wakizashi.
>>
>>30649242
This. As a thing for killing a dissimilarly armed person a katana is really good, it's a big two handed sword whose only design priority is cutting good.

that's basically all big two handed swords though.
>>
>>30649199
It depends on what you want.
There's plenty out there, the main choice is if you want traditional esthetics, with a nice hamon or functionality.
Getting a sword with a nice hamon has the drawback of most of the sword being unhardened steel... making it bend like the one in the video when very strongly hitting something.
There are modern swords with a Bianite rather than unhardened back, but they have no blade structure and a simple hamon.
https://www.martialartswords.com/collections/japanese-swords/products/maple-katana

If you want something that both has a nice blade structure without bending permanently on a bad cut, you could also take a look at spending 2K on a European or Chinese alternative:
e.g.
http://www.templ.net/english/weapons-antiquity_and_early_middle_age.php
>>
>>30649309
Only the German messers. A real long thin double sided sword is meant for versatility (including half swording) and range.

There's also the distinction that in Europe most two handed swords were field swords whereas katanas are basically gigantic sidearm.
>>
>>30649309
see this pic >>30649028
these large two handers would have fins that would stop a blade in its tracks and it also has that enormous handguard for the same purpose
the swords were designed to guard against attacks since the other hand would be used for weilding the sword also, instead of holding a shield like they typically would
>>
>>30649362
Is there a reason the Nips never used large cross guards? I know metal was harder to come by the Europe or was it just Japanese refusal to break with tradition
>>
>>30649471

Tradition mostly. They did make military swords with European-style handguards after Commodore Perry forced them to open their ports and modernize.
>>
>>30649471
I think they knew because of the shit steel the guards would just break over a couple of impacts. This is why the best samurai are always depicted as agile I suppose, since the best ones dont get hit.
>>
>>30649471
The large cross-guards tend to be used in fighting styles that have a lot of binding..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjT4JepA-Vc

maybe not ideal when most of your sword it unhardened steel weak to lateral pressure.

My pic is pretty good.

It was forged by an ancient dwarven smith called Eugenius Stonercleaver.
This magic blade can kill enemies from far just by pointing it and pulling a trigger.

Another very useful one is called the AK, made by an Orchish warlock called M'kaar'hyl Timofeevich Kal' Ahsh Nkov but it's said only goblinds and sand people use it these cursed weapons now.

Sword Cutlass
>>
I agree OP..

Self defense with swords WILL almost always take place in close quarters like your home. The only European style swords useable there are one handed arming swords. Good luck bringing a greatsword to bear in a doorway.

Katanas are only sharp on one edge. This is important because you're not gonna be fighting off a real attacker in armor, so you do not want to risk hurting yourself with your own sword.

The curved profile is better for deep cutting with shallow swings you would make in a hallway and while European designs are more suitable for stabbing your first instinct is probably to swing it like a baseball bat, so the katana is a fine sword for home defense.

So long as you actually keep it sharp.

If you don't, then an arming sword is the better choice.
>>
>>30650529
I'm not going to make ANY swings indoors, there just isn't room for that. Thrusts all day. For that a rapier or spada da lato would be great
>>
Some kind of short sword.
I don't see a katana or a zweihander being very useful innahouse.

>>
>>30649247
The gurkas aren't used to their opponents being armed with swords, as their prefered tactic is to slit your throat while you sleep.
>>30650529
Thrusts are infinitely better at killing people unless you are talking about cleaving them in half. People have a natural aversion to thrusting though... but if you over come that a rapier is the best sword indoors,

>sword for self defence
A hidden cane sword would be the closest to ideal for this day and age. Just like CCWs, the idea is to not let your potential assailants know where your weapon is on your body.

Now the only issue is deciding whether you want a stab-only smallsword blade or something with an edge. Also figuring out how to carry it without looking like an autist walking around with a cane he clearly doesn't need. Maybe it would look more convincing if you're an older gentleman with a substantial beard.

The AK is an elvish weapon, anon.
>>
>>30652413
Cuts are safer when fighting an opponent with another melee weapon and are harder to avoid when done properly. It is hard to stab someone in the hand to make him drop his knife compared to slicing his fingers after all.

Just about any edged sword design should do fine however. Only ridiculously specialized ones with no edge will have a problem. Hell, even a greatsword can be used for home defense if you fall back on the more spear-like maneuvers and make use of its huge reach.

>>
>>30651944
A katana is fairly short though, could be half the size of a zweihander for that matter.
>>
>>30648595
Depends on the situation.
For the skilled swordsman, some kind of jian.
For prolonged open field battles, long sword with a strong guard
For the untrained a dao because it can just hack apart anything, has a nice circle guard and is relatively easy to use since it armed Chinese infantry for thousands of years.

This.

A Dadao or 20+ inch bladed kukri are your best bets.
>>
>>30657368
European alternatives like falchions, cutlasses and dussacks and one handed messer would also do the trick.
But it's more likely that you'll find a decent Chinese type to buy of the shelf.
Kukri make sense, but will be at disadvantage when facing a longer object in the hands of the opponent, like a sword, baseball-bat or golf-club.
>>
>>30657431
White people designs are always the best, but you're right that they are expensive.

There is a version of this that is 6-7 inches longer. About $250 I believe. Not a bad option for someone in Cuckanada or Swedistan.

ou need to carry a weapon in medieval world tho. It's unsafe enough in the streets at night, imagine how shit it would be if you have to travel to another town at night. Wolves, stray dogs, road agents, brigands, desperados, all sort of people would like to have a piece of you.

In medieval england, there's a law that requires an adult to own at least a sword while in china, travellers would carry a sword with them (Usually jian or straight sword, while monks would usually carry a that ringed staff). Even in Japan, where a plebs couldn't carry a sword, they would still carry a simple staff to protect themselves
