Hey guys, I'm looking to buy some kind of rifle. Bolt action. What's best for hunting deer? I've shot guns before just never owned one.

This is a very broad question, which really should be broken down into smaller, more easily-answered queries. But first, how much money are you willing to spend? At what range do you think you'll be hunting? Do you intend to buy any more weapons besides this one?

Start out with a Mauser 1871, and go forward from there. Pretty much any made after the Dreyse will work fine.

anything between a .243 to 30-06, yes deer can be harvested with 22-250 or even 223, but specialty bullets are required and shot placement is critical, if you think you might go after bigger game such as elk and dont want to buy another gun, jump straight to the 30 caliber range options, .270 is absolute minimum for elk and you're getting back into needed fancy bullets and no room for error with shot placement. Are you making long shots in open terrain you'll want a flatter shooting caliber, 25-06, .308, .270, hunting brush and closer ranges you cant go wrong with the classic 30-30, all around most versatile is probably a 30-06, wide variety of bullet weights available will allow you to expand into more large game in the future, what really matters is handling a few rifles to see which you like best and do a bit of research on what caliber matches your needs, then don't skimp on our optic

Op here, thanks for your guys input. I'm probably going to go buy a 30-06 since I'm very familiar with that gun and lots are recommending it. Plus the ammo isn't expensive

My gun knowledge is very little. So yea. Retarded when it comes to guns. I know what not to do. That's about it.
Just go buy an AR10 or a PSL. Then take pictures so when someone says "YOU CAN'T HUN WITH THAT! IT'D BLOW THE DURR IN HALF!" you can mock them with photos of the still intact yet very dead deer.
If you can still find a cheap one where you are a Mosin will do just fine and does not cost a fortune to buy. Might be a pain in the ass for mounting optics though if you're not cool with using irons.
I have a Ruger M77 MkII in .30-06 with a nice scope on it. It's apparently expensive (mine was a gift) and preforms like it.

Get a savage axis xp chambered in .308. In most of America they can be had for 300$ and that includes a cheap serviceable scope. You'll have no trouble hitting out to 300 yards reliably without any upgrades.
