The Hi-Point actually cuts the mustard if you're dirt poor (which is much more than what can be said for anything else at a similar pricepoint), but you can get a radically better pistol for just $100 more.
Pic related is a Zastava M70A, it's a Tokarev clone made in Serbia, chambered for 9mm Luger, it's redesigned to have a functioning safety (rather than those afterthoughts jammed onto original Tokarevs by shoddy importers), you can find one used for as little as $250 if you're lucky, a brand new one is typically less than $300 and comes with two mags.

I was backpacking and had a High Point as a self defense gun. When we were in Colorado I was setting my pack down and it went off and shot and killed my friends girlfriend. We had a short ceremony where we were camping and hid the body. We told her parents that she met some sketchy dudes and took off with them. Just keep in mind the "you're poor" argument, these fuckers have a plastic handgun. It's basic. Maybe a sight. Nothing to it. It's the cheapest thing they could find anyone could find it. They're not passing it down to anyone even if they survive long enough. You can score various piece of shit .25ACP pistols at like $50 but most of them blow their breech-block out the rear of the slide with a few magazines.
Thankfully, .25ACP isn't too high pressure and the gas goes everywhere, so at least it doesn't explode like a zinc handbomb.

There is no history with a .25 ACP or it's effectiveness.
when it comes to the weapon that feeds a caliber I'm really disappointed with most peoples attitudes toward their tradition and history. Their guns are not much different in use than a knock off Kalashnikov rifle from an illegal manufacturing line. Then they rage over when the features of a kalash rifle are getting banned.
