I'm looking for a cheap hunting rifle, I have a thing for wood stocks but besides that my preference is just cheap. I've looked around some local gun shops and Cabela's used section, is there anything in particular I should look for?

Savage Axis and Mossberg Patriot are modern bolt action hunting rifles that retail for about $300 and are available in a variety of chamberings.
Please do not buy a Mosin Nagant, its a waste of money.

Levergun in 30-30

What sort of game are you interested in hunting with this rifle?

If you want a modern cartridge with the same ballistics as a .30-30, a CZ 527 (mini-Mauser bolt action) in 7.62x39 would work fine. If you're hunting huge, dangerous game then maybe a .45-70 levergun or an Ares SCR with a .458 SOCOM upper and a wood stock.
Honestly OP you're not going to find a wood stock on anything truly cheap unless it's a Mosin. If you can find a Zastava M85 in a chambering you like, those are pretty decent and some have really nice wood, and can be found around $400ish retail.
If you're considering used guns, I'd look for a Savage 110 variant, a Ruger M77, or a Pre-2007 Remington 700. You could find one of these in a wood stock for $300-400 (no optics) depending on condition and the caliber.
Avoid the Remington 710 at all costs it is literally shit.

Did you even read the OP?

You can get a used Savage 110, with optic, for $225 all day long.

The CZ527 is ~$600, comes with usable irons until you can afford an optic, and shoots well with $0.20-$0.25 per round cheap Russian steel case. Unless you're a complete hoser that only shoots one box a month you'll quickly make back the price difference on ammo. I admit the other two are silly suggestions.

there you go. with different bullet weights, bullet drop is similar while energy and terminal ballistics are nothing alike.
