Go to the kitchen and get a butter knife, now go get a brick and start filing that blade down, in about 50 hours you'll have a point on that butter knife and now you can defend against the hordes (also for a long distance weapon, tape the newly sharpens butter knife to a broom stick #polearmbaby)

You could buy a rusted ol shitty H&R .32 for that. Seen a Cobra .38 derringer for 60 the other day as well.
If it's imperative you need a weapon go find like a 6" diameter oak stick and whittle it into a war club. Go buy some metal screws with the bolt heads and some washers/wing nuts. Then you need a piece of old rebar to strengthen the top 3/4 of it. You can usually find some laying around the hood wherever you might find a parking block.

Go to a garage sale and buy the biggest chefs knife they got. $5, done.
I recommend you go to your local flea market and look for bargains. People usually sell some great defense weapons at good prices. Best part is, you can haggle.
If anything, my CCW instructor says that when it comes to non-firearm related weaponry, a good baton and pepperspray is affordable and top choice.
He also said that a good and "they'll expect it" kind of weapon is a flashlight. Some flashlights have their ends shaped to give a tactical edge.
