On a related note, it's always been fascinating to note the extreme disparity in equipment quality among Warsaw Pact countries, especially among satellite states. Hell, the difference between frontline and rear echelon troops is pretty steep. East German and Russian units tend to be the best outfitted, almost approaching NATO tier, while Czech and Hungarian forces tend to see a slight dip in equipment compared to the former. Romanian, Polish, and other smaller states are even more pronounced.

Also, what's the goddamn deal with Soviet equipment/uniform standards? Almost every single country used nonstandard equipment that couldn't be interchanged with friendly supply lines from neighboring countries.

Not OP, but I have a folder with several Osprey PDFs, mostly containing series Elite (1-200), and Men-At-Arms (1-445).

If ya want any pic, just request, or if you want some funzies, roll for random stuff (1-445 for MAA, 445-645 for Elite. Any other number? reroll).

Ethnic Albanian Forces in Kosovo, Serbia and Macedonia

Volunteer of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac Liberation Army

>The UQPMB wore the same sleeve and beret badges as the Kosovo UQK, but with the inscription ‘USHTRIA QLIRIMT ARE E PRESHEVES, MEDVEGJES DHE BUJANOCIT’ and the initials 'UQPMB’. This fighter is wearing an obsolete 1960s JNA camouflage uniform, and has pulled on a woollen face mask to avoid recognition by the Serbian Police.

Military Policeman, National Liberation Army (Black Mountains and Tetovo) Macedonia

>The UQK (NMET) wore the same uniforms as the Kosovo UQK, with similar red cloth sleeve and beret badges showing a black two-headed eagle, the black inscription 'USHTRIA QLIRIMT ARE KOMBET ARE’ and the initials 'UQK’. This man wears black civilian clothing, and on the left upper sleeve a white-edged black brassard with a beret badge and the white initials 'PU’ for Policia Ushtarake - Military Police; there was also a plain black armband with larger white letters. The Albanian National Army probably wore similar beret and sleeve badges, with the inscription 'ARMATA KOMBETARE SHQIPTARE’ and the initials 'AKSH’.

Officer, Kosovo Liberation Army

>Ethnic Albanian guerrillas in Kosovo, southern Serbia and Macedonia used any camouflage uniforms they could find, capture or smuggle, often combined with civilian - particularly black - items; this officer wears a German Army M94 camouflage uniform. On the left upper sleeve the UQK wore a red cloth straight-sided shield with a black two-headed Albanian eagle, gold piping, the inscription 'USHTRIA QLIRIMTARE E KOSOVES’ and the initials 'UQK’. A smaller round cloth badge was worn on a black or red beret or peaked camouflage field cap. No rank insignia were worn.

British Forces, Northern Ireland, 1980s and 1990s

Private, 1st Battalion, The King’s Own Scottish Border Regiment

>Patrolling goes on 365 days a year in Northern Ireland. In the depth of winter snow suits, developed for use by ski troops in Norway, are issued. The two-piece suits are simply worn over the soldiers’ normal combat kit, although in very cold weather quilted jackets and trousers are also worn. A white cover is also available for the new Combat Helmet.

Private, 1st Battalion, The Cheshire Regiment

>This soldier is wearing DPM waterproof clothing that is now used widely by troops on urban patrol or static guard duty. This soldier is manning a trench complex, similar to a number built in the Late 1980s to protect Royal Engineers building PVCPs and observation towers in border regions and occupied for many weeks at a time. Waterproof clothing is essential for these troops due to the heavy rainfall in the region.

Sergeant, 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment

>In rural areas patrols have to blend into the countryside while standard fieldcraft rules apply. Camouflage cream is worn on the face and helmets are covered with foliage. Note the blackened metal version of the Parachute Regiment cap badge. Because of the poor quality of 1980s issue combat kit many soldiers purchased equipment privately; this Paratrooper boasts gaiters to keep his boots dry and a bergen. A number of units are also issued with the Ml6Al/M203 grenade launcher combination attached to increase their firepower.

Ulster Defence Regiment, Northern Ireland

Private, Ulster Defence Regiment, 1971

>In the early days few modern uniforms and little equipment were available to the UDR. Its first rifles were .303 Lee Enfields, while olive drab smocks and trousers made up the first uniforms. By 1972 7.62mm SLRs and DPM combat uniforms were in widespread use. This UDR soldier is prepared to go on VCP duty, with stripped down 58 pattern webbing to ease debussing from cramped Land Rovers.

Private, Ulster Defence Regiment, 1988

>The UDR was the first non-NATO roled unit to be equipped with the SA-80 small arms system. Standard British infantry uniforms and equipment are issued to the UDR and it is now difficult to differentiate between members of the regiment and their Regular Army counterparts. UDR soldiers wear a shoulder slide, however, which has the number of their parent regiment (i.e. 4 UDR) embroidered in black. By 1992 all UDR battalions had been equipped with the 90 Pat (Inf.) Equipment webbing system.

Female Private, Ulster Defence Regiment, 1989

>To search females and children at VCPs the UDR recruited its first female soldiers in 1973; their original radio call-sign was ‘Greenfinch’ and the name has stuck. They were not members of the WRAC but fully fledged members of the UDR. This predated the Regular Army’s 1992 change of policy regarding woman soldiers by some 19 years. While out on patrol in rural areas Greenfinches wear standard DPM combat kit, 58 pattern belt and the UDR beret. They are unarmed.

Serbian Militia Forces, 1990s

Dobrovoljac, Chetnik Detachments

>The SCP received JNA uniforms and equipment and commonly wore paratroopers’ camouflage uniforms. The ‘Volunteer’ illustrated wears a traditional Serbian sajkaca cap with commercially bought wreathed double-headed eagle, a JNA 'tiger stripe’ camouflage summer shirt, and JNA paratrooper leaf-pattern sleeveless smock and trousers. Militiamen, often bearded, had no rank insignia but did wear various sleeve badges, usually incorporating a skull-and- crossbones and other Chetnik and Royal Yugoslav insignia; one of the first badges was a Serbian tricolour chevron with a cross and the four Cyrillic ’S’ characters of the traditional Serbian motto - 'Only Unity will Save the Serbs’.

Pukovnik, Serbian Volunteer Guard

>The SDG wore this green uniform or a camouflage uniform of unknown origin, black uniforms, or surplus US Army M82 camouflage, all with the SDG badge on the right upper sleeve, and on the left upper sleeve a tiger’s head on a Serbian flag and 'TIGROVI’ (Tigers). Green, black or red berets were worn, with either the Krajina TO rectangular Serbian flag badge, the Serbian and Krajina Police flag on a gold ornamental base, or a metal 'Tigers’ badge. JNA breast badges indicated rank; Zeljko 'Arkan’ Raznjatovic, who wore no rank insignia, promoted his men to officer rank and at least three to general officers - although only the SDG recognized the ranks; this man is ostensibly a colonel.

Dobrovoljac, Serbian Guard

>Operating without JNA logistic support, the anti-communist SG wore surplus US Army summer uniforms, with the SG title and quadruple Cyrillic ’S’ badge on the left upper sleeve or above the left breast pocket. Personnel wore a silver eagle badge on a black beret, and no rank insignia.

Irish Defence Forces, Northern Ireland, 1980s

Sergeant, Irish Army

>The Irish Army buys its equipment from a wide range of sources, although Britain has been a main supplier in the past. This is reflected in this soldier’s 58 pattern webbing and 7.62mm GPMG, both standard British Army items. The rest of the uniform is of Irish origin. On internal patrols along the Northern Ireland border American Ml952 flak jackets are worn.

Private, Army Ranger Wing

>First formed in 1980 the Army Ranger Wing (ARW) has two main roles, long-range patrolling in conventional warfare and anti-terrorist operations such as hostage release and VIP security. As with elite units world-wide, the ARW has great freedom in the weapons and equipment it chooses to use. While rarely seen, photographs of the ARW suggest that a mix of Irish Army issue equipment and commercially available items are used, including British-made DPM bergens and a variety of webbing systems. Standard Irish Army helmets are sometimes worn but in rural operations black woollen caps are used. Weapons include shotguns for close quarter work and Heckler & Koch MP5s.

Garda Siochana Special Branch

>Uniformed Garda Siochana officers are unarmed, so in response to increasing PIRA activity in the Republic the Irish Government equipped elite plain clothes Special Branch units with automatic weapons. They have access to a wide range of modern weapons including Heckler & Koch MP5s and the popular 9mm Uzi submachine guns, as shown here. Special Branch units participate in all sensitive security operations, such as the handing over of PIRA suspects being extradited to Northern Ireland. Like this officer, they are considered snappy dressers and favor Barbour jackets and brogue shoes.

Leading Seaman, Irish Naval Service

Post-war British Jungle Operators

NCO, The Independent Parachute Squadron. 22nd SAS Regiment (Malaya, 1956-57)

>This NCO, who wears no rank badges, displays what has come to be accepted as ‘typical’ SAS jungle combat uniform: beaten-up olive green tropical denims, a cut-down olive green bush hat, '44 pattern webbing, and leather and canvasjungle boots (unpopular for falling apart too easily). His 'bergen’ is the old canvas type with a steel A-frame, dating from the Second World War. The Winchester 12-gauge pump, with five-round magazine and cut-down barrel, was an excellent close-quarter weapon, even more popular than the prized Australian Owen 9mm SMG for its ability to extract a patrol from an ambush.

NCO, 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (Belize, 1983)

>This NCO wears the DPM tropical combat suit, with a buttoned fly over the front zipper of the blouse, and drawstrings at waist and ankle. The unpopular British Army jungle boots are replaced by the superior US type. He wears a DPM bush hat and '58 pattern webbing; and carries the M16A1. Weighing only 6 lbs. with a 20-round magazine and single-shot or automatic capability, this saw its first British use with the SAS in Malaya, and is still issued for jungle operations.

IDF of the ‘70s and '80s

First we see a commando of Sayeret Mat'kal (Intelligence Recon) from the Entebbe Raid. He wears a Syrian “lizard” pattern camouflage used by the commandos as it was believed to be similar to that worn by the Palestinian bodyguards employed by Amin, and thus would facilitate their ruse. He carries a Soviet-AK, a common arm within elite IDF units.

The second commando is of the Golani Brigade, and equipped for the anti-terrorist operation at Kibbutz Misgav Am in 1980. For the close quarter battle, he carries an Uzi submachine gun, with two magazines clipped together at a 90 degree angle.

Finally is a pilot of a Bell-212, used for medical evacuations. As he operates often behind enemy lines, he carries a Glilon SAR in case he goes down.

Warsaw pact was fa less standardized and under direct "harsh" Soviet control as we usually love to think. People back in the '80 wondered if some WarPact nations would have even bothered to fight for the Soviet block (Poland was a classical example). Only the Best Germans were intergrated in the Soviet command as much as the Soviet themselves would have liked, and for second-line troops like the Hungarians/Czechs there where precise political reasons why they were kept less well armed.

Tbh, not that West block minors were much better. Bar elite troops, many conscript armies where kinda of ill-equipped, badly led and terribly trained (at least if I trust the words of the generation who had to endure conscription).

Yesterday's other poster here. Not OP tho.

Most of the public torrents are dead, some are new and may contain a shitload of pdf, but they're unverified.

What I currently have is most of the slightly older issues (pre-2015) from the Men-at-Arms, Elite, New Vanguard and Weapons series.

So how do I into sharing?
