Hey /k/ poorfag here and i need help on choosing a cheap handgun.
As of right now I have a budget of 200$ for a handgun and am torn between a Highpoint C9(159$) and a surplus Taurus MD80 38spl(140$). The main purpose is home defense and just so I have something other than my Mossberg 590 and Winchester 308 scout

Ide obviously like to save up and get a clock or S&W or something a bit nicer but with things going on right now this is all I can afford to shell out.
>>
>>30624349
don't buy a hi-point unless you've got health insurance that'll cover reattaching fingers
>>
>590

you have a home defense gun. save that $200 & get a better handgun
>>
>>30624349
You can have a clock for ~20 dollars. Nicer ones are in the 50 range.
>>
>>30624362
Any other budget semi auto's house recommend?
>>
>>30624401
The reason I wanted a handgun is because I live in a semi rural area and its a meth highway. Neighbors and I have been catching people trying to steal shit off of our property and ide just like a backup to the shotgun.
>>
>>30624349
Your mossberg is enough
Save a hundred more for a S&W SD9 VE
>>
>>30624349
Don't bother getting any handgun that cheap. You're protected well enough with the shotgun. Just make sure you can use that well and have some decent quality ammo.

Look at handguns again when you have closer to $350, then you can buy something that won't remove your hand.
>>
>>30624349

Save your money.

You can get a lot of quality guns for $300.

If you absolutely have to have something now, go to Pawn shops and try to find a pistol or revolver that's got a horrible fucked up finish; but still works well mechanically.
>>
Anything wrong with those RIA colt detective special copies?
>>
>>30624558
they're basically an armscor and armscor is known for making good guns. Cheap shit that wont get anyone thinking your smart or cool guns but they work.
>>
>>30624558
More info?

>>30624476
A friend recommended a Taurus 85 and I can get one of them for right around 200$. If I could bump up to 250$ what would be good then?

The Hi-Point will suffice, but if you save up just a little more you can get a much nicer Zastava M70A, they go for below $300, see if you can find one used.

Avoid Taurus revolvers, usually very shoddy workmanship.

>>30624362
You're a fucking retard, Hi-Points eat +P like it's nothing.

>>30624476
And you don't know what you're talking about either.
>>
>>30624597
>More info?
Don't have any, just read about them a few times over the past couple years never really heard anything from someone that owns one.
I always liked the look of detective specials for some reason.
Cylinder looks really fat/bulky for a .38 just eyeballing it but most revolvers I've seen on gun shelfs for sale tend to be.
>>
Scrounge up $40 more (+some tax) and get a Taurus PT111 Millennium G2. It's my CCW, 9mm, double stack and the reviews are just about all glowing.

If you can bump up to $250 you can afford a significantly better weapon than a Taurus revolver.

See if you can find a used Zastava M70A, otherwise, the Hi-Point is looking like your best option.

For 250 you could probably get a SCCY CPX-2 brand new. It'd be easy to conceal on your person, reliable, 10 round capacity and I believe it takes the common S&W mags.

Taurus revolvers made recently (like the last ten years at least) are okay. Stay away from any Taurus product that's auto loading or old enough to have a patina.

Hi point is an incredibly good value with a couple of sore spots. The good: it's extremely durable and accurate. There are few parts, so it isn't prone to breakage. The bad: it hardly runs. Seriously, there are highpoints that have trouble running an entire mag when clean. Also, highpoints cannot be concealed. Even the .380s are thicker than a 1911.

The RIA revolvers are super cheap, but also unicorns. I want one to compare to my D frame but can't even order one because apparently they're made in batches.

The rough rider runs well but is not durable. Good for plinking and can be had with a .22 mag conversion chamber new for 230 or so.

You could get a Cobray .380 new for around 100 bucks, but I would advise against it unless you are sure you want to upgrade later. It's a viable but inferior pistol.

Now. I know you're on a tight budget. If you can save for a few months and get 300 bucks saved up you'll be in new S&W SD9ve territory. That's some serious firepower.

Found some for 199$ locally will look into it.>>30624851
Looked into it and good reviews, thanks for the advice.
>>30624866
Haven't found any below 300 locally as of right now but thanks for the advice.

Old Taurus revolvers are a fine choice

The PT92 and PT99 are pretty good if you replace the factory magazines.
>>
>>30624997
Looked into the sccy and am marking it as a contender. I found them in my area for 289$ but I may be able to find em cheaper. As for the sdve9 ide probably have to go used.
>>
>>30624997
>The bad: it hardly runs. Seriously, there are highpoints that have trouble running an entire mag when clean
Hi-Point have this thing where you sometimes get a magazine which is out of spec, and you end up having to tweak the feed lips with pliers if you want to get them working.
But if you have a magazine out of the box which works, it'll run.

Another thing is that if you run real cheap shit ammo like Winchester Whitebox or Winchester Forged shit, you'll have a bad time

Finally, Hi-Point are very generous with their customer service, as long as the serial number isn't defaced, they'll help you with any issue you have, not rarely replacing your gun for free.

>>30624349
Find a S&W SD9VE used for $200

Don't get a hi point or Taurus anon. Pls.
>>
>>30625220
I'm seeing them for 300$ range in my area.

Fuck buying guns for under $200, if you want a revolver just save your money and get a police trade-in S&W for $350:

Could always look at an old Eibar Ruby or something desu

Some of them can be dirt cheap, but on the other hand, they aren't usually very good.

If this was a couple of years ago I'd have said to get a Cz 82.

You can get ruger p85s and p89s for 200-300. Designed for the military contract beretta ended up getting, so they are built like tanks. Ugly fuckers though

If the Taurus is in decent condition (Good lock up, no cylinder play, etc) get it. You know for sure a revolver won't jam.

Hi-Points are decent but I honestly wouldn't trust my life with one.

If you could save even an extra $50 you could probably get something better though, like a new Armscor revolver.
>>
>>30624349
Hey if you go hi poont go .380 ok? Way better than their 9
>>
>>30624349
The dollar sign goes IN FRONT of the number, like this $200. Dumbass children.
>>
>>30624409
Sw sdve 9mm. They go for less than 300 dollars are their is really nothing wrong with them. Trigger is a little heavy but not as bad as some say. It's a nice size, and holds 16 rounds. A fine defense / budget carry or home defense gun. The extra 100 dollars is worth it.
