If Elmer Keith's #5 SAA is such a great design, how come nobody makes a copy of it? I mean a functional copy, with the ergonomic and mechanical enhancements but not neccessarily the fancy engraving or ivory grips. Is the design copyrighted by Keith's estate or something?

No idea.

One of these years when I have the better part of a grand burning a hole in my pocket, I'll have a gunsmith take a Vaquero -- the smaller frame one -- and put a Bisley trigger and hammer and good aftermarket target sights on it, then give it an action and trigger job. That'll get me 85% of the way there.

That's my pet theory, anyway.

I think Elmer Keith's blown-up SAA cylinder is the coolest thing Forotten Weapons has covered, because it's a turning point in firearms history crystallized into a physical object that you can hold in your hand.
All those weird old guns are neat and all, but a lot of them are forgotten for a reason.

There's no large market for one.

Because the Ruger Blackhawk exists if you want a single action revolver with target sights.

Being a fan of Keith and the 44 Magnum cartridge myself i agree, this was a really cool piece of history.

Ruger sells plenty of single-action revolvers; surely someone would be interested in buying a mass-produced version of the ne plus ultra of single actions rather than a custom job that costs $$$$ like >>30624702.
>>
>>30624871
The appeal of Keith's Number 5 is the fine fit and tuning. If you mass produce it its just a look a like with the same accuracy and trigger as a base model Blackhawk.
>>
>>30624916
Not exactly; the #5 also has ergonomic and mechanical improvements like the hybrid grip frame and improved cylinder pin and cylinder pin retention lever. If there's enough fragmentation in the cowboy revolver market to support Bisley-style and normal single-actions, another option, especially one with Keith's imprimatur, would surely find an audience.
>>
>>30622524
I absolutely loved that piece. Nothing proves you're an absolute madman badass like blowing up a cylinder with loads you made that powerful on purpose.

Elmer Keith is a god damned saint.
>>
>>30620965
Ruger's Bisley and Freedom Arms's grip are similar to the 5's. For an actual replica you can go to a custom maker.

Keep in mind that Keith had small hands and this is a gun made specifically for him, which he all but abandoned for a standard Super Blackhawk.
>>
>>30625798
That's good to know. So, the #5's improvements over a regular SAA are a bit like hose-clamping a Maglite to your AR, in that it was ahead of the curve at the time, but has been rendered moot by subsequent developments so there's no practical reason to try to duplicate it today.
>>
>>30625349
A audience of a few hundred at most, surely. Combine that with the intense amount of hand fitting and there's no way you can make it worth while.

If you want a number five style gun you can certainly get one, its just a matter of money.

Bowen Custom will build you a #5 from either a Ruger Vaquero or new production Colt SAA. As to why there aren't commercial models, I'm not sure.

Ruger does make Bisley style Blackhawks (adjustable sights) and Vaqueros (fixed sights)

Uberti also builds a Bisley model.

Pic is a Stainless Ruger Vaquero Bisley
