If you fire a cartridge through a semi automatic handgun, then afterwards remove the extractor, ejector, firing pin, and barrel, melt them down, dispose of them, and replace them there should be absolutely no ballistic trace possible on either the projectile or the casing... Correct?
Also, does a projectile pick up any ballistic fingerprint when fired through a series of baffles that never touches the projectile?

>Correct?
yes.
Chemical forensics, however, may be able to identify powder residue from a particular brand of ammunition and match it to that on the bullet, and there's a few other ways that could possibly make a connection, but it would be difficult to make a conviction on it, I expect.
>melting a gun barrel
use frangible ammunition, then you could get a box of a couple hundred rounds, fire them and retain your gun

>Ballistic finger prints
Barring TV law enforcement propaganda shows how often is this ever used to catch criminals? How would they even know to check your gun?
>Hurr what if I melt these specific things??
Buy a handheld cutting torch from home depot and melt/cut the whole thing into slag then throw it in a large river.

It's not considered admissable evidence. Just used in case building.

...I find it decidedly inconvenient that the gun was never found.

Oi, you git! Present your plumber's licence for inspection. Are you aware you are transporting more than 1.5 stones worth of high volume pipe? Bit excessive innit?

Doesn't using a bore brush change the striation print enough to throw off a match?

Never.
