ITT: We separate accessories and features for a civilian's fighting rifle into four categories:

Necessities: Without these, your odds of success and survival are extremely low in a firefight.

Good Accessories: These help the shooter's odds of survival and success greatly in a firefight.

Shooter Preference: These may or may not help the odds of success and survival in a firefight.

Bad Features or Accessories: These lower the odds of success and survival in a firefight, but idiots have them anyway.

Instead of detailing an elaborate scenario, let's just assume that this rifle is:
A. The one rifle that someone can own in their house for combat.
B. Only to be used for combat.

Sling
>>
>>30614324
+1 nomination for 'necessity'

Having a sling on a rifle allows you to carry said rifle while freeing up your arms, while still having positive retention (i.e. not in the dirt/mud/where some asshole can steal it while you're not looking)
>>
Good accessories: optics beyond just irons. Whether it uses batteries or tritium, fixed/variable/no magnification, it really helps to have an optic on your rifle.
>>
>>30614385
the layout, according to OP is "only for combat".
while i agree a sling is very useful, if youre ONLY talking about combat, then a sling is at best a "good accessory". a sling doesnt decease "your odds of success in a firefight"
im just going by OP's words

>Necessities: Without these, your odds of success and survival are extremely low in a firefight.

A sling, red dot and flashlight.

>Good Accessories: These help the shooter's odds of survival and success greatly in a firefight.

Accessories that work for you and around you, not the other way around. Flashlight and IR lasers that are easily accessible and ergonomic to actuate. A well configured loadout that allows for quick access to a magazine. Huge plus on being able to shoot ambidextrously with a sling that facilitates ease of switching shoulders

>Shooter Preference: These may or may not help the odds of success and survival in a firefight.

Grip, stock and pistol grip

>Bad Features or Accessories: These lower the odds of success and survival in a firefight, but idiots have them anyway.

Overly bulky and poorly configured rifles. Hobby grade equipment on rifles with hard use in mind. Awkwardly placed flashlights in relation to foregrip location.

At the end of the day, no amount of gear or aluminum shits slapped onto your gun will make the difference between you living or you dying. You have to practice with it until every manipulation is made a subconcious effort.

For a shtf rifle, I'd have to say...
Necessary: semiauto, flashlight, solid Ironsights, sling
Good: powerful caliber, non-battery scope, decent flash hider, decent knife-like bayonet (if you don't have a dedicated shtf knife already)
Preference: bipod
Negative: anything that adds unecessary weight.

Plz add or critique this list folks, but I think it's pretty spot-on.
>>
>>30614622
>sling
>necessary in a firefight
Nope.

>>
>>30614724
It's fun to play pretend.
>>
>>30614663
Well, it's pretty close to necessary for the stuff that comes immediately before and after. As in if you have to climb over a wall you need a sling. If you want to treat a casualty without laying your rifle down, you need a sling. These are all things that improve the chance of a successful outcome. Maybe not important in a home defense situation where you want to barricade yourself in, but if you're actively prosecuting threats you want a sling.

Not an excuse. You specifically said they're not needed in a firefight. Don't try to backpedal like a little bitch.

It must be fun to only go shooting at your square range and then act like a retard on /k/.
>>
>>30614776
And I stand by that, they're not. They can be circumstantially nice to have but can just as equally get in the way when you're not imagining operator situations that will never actually happen.

Dat transition from the right hand to the left.
>>
Also slings let you get that stabilization for distance shots. If your wobble zone is unacceptable at 200 from the kneeling you can sling up and lock it in for better precision.

>>30614787
>situations that will never happen
>situations that have literally happened to a ton of GWOT vets
These are common in modern urban combat, anon. If you're arguing you will never need to take place in urban combat that's a different argument.

What about a specific design of a firearm? For example lightweight barrels. Good idea or does that .10lb lighter barrel actually give you an advantage?

Automatic, Magazine fed

Not super important, but slightly changes accuracy and longevity. If you gave a soldier a pencil barrel before battle then went back in time and gave him a heavy barrel before the same battle, chances are the results would be the same.

Eh, I don't know about that...I'm guessing the benefits of having melee weapons in combat, especially those that would add length and weight to your rifle, are seldom realized.

No. A muzzle-loader with a bag of balls and horn of powder is not a viable weapon system in a modern firefight you contrarian retard. If you brought these to bear in a firefight with anyone that had an AR-15 then, as OP said, your odds of success would be extraordinarily low.

If you actually get to shoot in the forests that YOU pay for with tax money, you'd appreciate having a sling. Humping 2-3 long guns a couple miles on foot is just NOT possible if they don't have slings. Both in the army and out I've found slings to be invaluable. They're a must have on all of my long guns that aren't ancient milsurp.

Go ahead and waddle your fat ass into your local indoor range and make sure you carry the weapon in your waifu case.

Others will be more properly equipped.

N: Irons, backup or primary. Sling. Good magazines. Good ammo. Good cleaning kit and lube. Forward assist if applicable.

GA: Light, foregrip, short-mid range optics, tasteful rails, comfy furniture.

SP: Modified charging handle, bolt release, etc. Fresh trigger. Ranger Plates. Suppressors.

BA: Lasers. Side-mounted BUS or anything like that. 1000 meter optics on a fighting rifle. Bayonets. Faggy muzzle-break. Serious use of steel-cased ammo.

These are only my opinions influenced by preferences adopted in my experiences and training. Any opinions displayed in this post may be skewed by situational bias. Worth exactly what you paid for them.
