Laser guns. They already exist, just not as blasters where they instantly blow a hole in things. also less useful in fog

With advances in power storage and the reduction in beam diffusion, they definitely can hit movie-levels of damage.

This one is Chinese, it's basically a big powerful laser pointer, and it's illegal because it blinds people

they use it to attack drone sensors and cameras.
>>
>>30610654
Why not more watts? You could use big ass batteries in the magwell and make 80 W CO2 laser rifles and just slice away at anything.

>But we'll totally be buzzing around the skies in flying cars by 2066!

average person =/= qualified and trained pilot with army of support tech to keep the plane above the ground.
However, flying car that is smart enough to fly itself perfectly, recharge itself reliably and full of redundancies is realistic in the next 50 years. Won't be cheap tho.
>>
>>30610654
>plasma based
Impractical you would need a magnetic field generator on the gun which would ask for a power supply like a battery and if you have a battery it means your gun can explode if you overload its capacity and it will actually explode once the battery runs dry and nothing is left holding all of that fucking plasma in the cartridge. Stupid fuck.

In reality guns of the future will just use an upgraded nanoengineered super version of gunpowder. None of that science fiction energy horseshit.
>>
I guess airguns will make some progress. Back in the 80s we started having airguns that broke the sound barrier and nowadays there's stuff like the AirForce Texan that can throw massive .45 cal slugs downrange with pretty acceptable velocity and accuracy, and there are several super accurate bolt action .22 air rifles like the FX Impact. I can only expect airguns to progress even further and maybe they could start having role in defensive or tactical situations.
>>
>>30610622
Everything will be made to look like an AR15, regardless of its actual operation. The future is going to be terrible.

>>30611144
that "gun grabbers" want to forcibly seize guns is a misconception. the idea is that with guns being criminalized, they will gradually go out of circulation and not be replaced, kinda like what happened to the penny in a lot of places.

Honestly, any sense of new or interesting industrial design seems to have been sapped out of the arms industry. I bet that in 2048 or 2156 or whenever, we'll have laser and plasma and rail guns that look exactly like modern-day weapons. And not, like, fairly similar, I mean straight up "we are using the centuries-old production molds for the Kriss Super V/Vector submachine gun to create the housing for this laser rifle. Also, we offer an AR15 styled body kit for it as an option if you order with us directly"

Either all gone and in the hands of only the government, or pretty much like they are today.

Think about it - the AR-15 is based on a design that is over 50 years old now. The Mosin and 1911 are over 100. AK-47 somewhere inbetween. They're damned effective and hard to beat.
Probably more polymer, more things to fancy them up - better optics, reduced weight, materials that are marginally better for certain conditions, but overall, I doubt that the gun my grandson buys is going to outperform my current arsenal at all.

2 round capacity

no handguns

finger print scanning device to activate, 10 minute battery life, will still activate with a picture of correct finger print taped to print scanner.

No grips what so ever, you have to let the gun fly out of your hands from recoil and hope the scanner deactivates and engages drop safety

you are put under constant surveillance for owning a deadly weapon and must schedule weekly psychiatric appointments to assess your mental health for wanting a dangerous weapon

weapon safety is mandatory three fourths of the safety course is cultural sensitivity training

must pay large licensing tax fee to fund
marijuana farms when you purchase hunting permit

must wear gps when you go hunting to track where your assault weapon goes at all times

you must have a permit and file a background check and have a mental health example, and wait 3 weeks for ammunition purchase

ammunition purchases limited to 1 round at a time

no black colored weapons, only bright neon green and must be covered in reflective tape over any moving parts

no sights are allowed on firearms, they allow for too quick of target acquisition

trigger pull must be between 35 and 50 pounds to ensure no accidental firing happens

must have an overall length of 10 meters long

firearms must make enough noise to deafen anyone within the area of a city block

firearms may only be fired in wilderness areas, no trees may be injured or firearm operator may be charged with a gross misdemeanor to nature with a fine up to 30,000$

Cased-telescoping polymer, with smart scopes that integrate lasers, flashlights, and thermals and have wireless for a HUD option.

OSS style suppressors will have replaced baffled ones.

Metamaterials can already fit mm-wave radar in a 10lb package; in 50 years radar will probably be the new thermal.

A semi-powered aim-stabilization chassis will probably be available by then, though who knows it if will be small and reliable enough. Modern ones up offhand accuracy to the level of bench shooting, combined with smart scopes it will be very good.

Electronic safeties will probably also be good enough to use by then, but I'm guessing they'll still be uncommon. If a scope breaks you can take it off, if an e-safety breaks you're fucked.

Realistic answer, laser guns. LEDs (which includes laser diodes) are improving exponentially by about 25% per year.

You might think this is bullshit, but you can get on amazon right now and buy a home laser cutter (sort of like a CNC machine) for like 200 bucks. Those green laser pointers are blinding soccer players at every game. The military is shooting down drones with real life laser cannons as of last year.

In roughly a decade from now you will be able to buy a real life laser pistol, although it will probably be expensive at first. A decade after that it will even be crazy cheap; because laser diodes only cost about 25 cents, and a laser pointer is basically just a diode plus a battery plus a switch, you could make an entire deadly firearm for like 5 bucks. And since there is no recoil, it doesnt need crazy high stress tolerances. It will be lightweight and easily concealable, like those laser pointers they have now. Also since its "ammo" is electricity you would have the equivalent of thousands and thousands of shots.

Another major development will be roboguns. Guns that aim themselves.

It will have a camera on the front (possibly 3 cameras for hardware triangulation, like depth perception only better) and maybe a lidar system, and who knows probably other stuff too. Lets call it a sensor package.

Its sensor package will feed data to a neuromorphic chip that identifies what is in front of the gun. If it sees multiple people it creates coordinate pairs of the locations of all the human heads it sees.

These coordinate pairs (x and y axis) are fed to a pair of X and Y stepper motors. The motors orient to line up with these pairs. Then the actual gun part will fire.

So basically you could just hold this thing up, press the button, and the gun gets 20 headshots in a fraction of a second. It takes advantage of the fact that computers can think and react MUCH faster than humans can.

If you think this is bullshit, here is a completely unbeatable rock paper scissors robot that actually exists.

Imagine this in gun format. As soon as the machine sees any part of you, the robogun instantly blows that part off in milliseconds before you have time to do anything.

Caseless ammunition will be functional

Military will probably have small-arms rail guns for designated marksmen.

Everything else is up in the air. Maybe standard military rifles will become shorter and shorter while maintaining the same effective range and precision as the M4, compensated by an exoskeleton suit to allow for steady & consistent aim; maybe military will keep the M4's current length but still caseless ammunition.

Everything else for civies will be essentially the same as now, just with caseless ammunition

Holy shit I cant even think of a way to defend against such a destructive weapon like laser safety goggles and mirrors

Some form of new round will be created. Maybe a continuation of caseless munitions.

Maybe fin stabilised discarding rounds, but cheaper with different materials.

It's honestly all up to speculation at this point.

Realistically would guns actually change that much?

Unless some radical new technology comes that changes firearms, what's the point of replacing the general system and ergonomics that we have today? Wouldn't it mostly be efficiency and effectiveness increases that we would be looking at for the next 50 years?

playing devils advocate here, but mirrors are actually not a solution to laser weaponry, even the most perfected mirrors absorb a slight amount of heat, and in deflecting light they absorb even more. Once a mirror passes a certain threshold it will start to melt and it's selectivity ratio will drop drastically before it essentially falls apart.
