Conscription works rather well for Israel. the actual fighting force is mostly on par with any other western military. Even non-voluntary ones, to some extent.

Second thing is, and that's a thing usually forgotten when people talk about conscription, is that along with the bunch of worthless scum that get's drafted and you just shove them into some forgotten hole where they won't make too much trouble, you also get the opposite side: the athletes, the analytical geniuses and all the other "best of the best" types that other non-voluntary armies would never even dream of laying ahand on them because they would go on to make something more productive with their lives than joining the army. That would worth squat (like it is in the Russian army), if not for the IDF recognizing and utalizing this potential- so they start screening for students as soon as 7th-8th grade (out of 12). If we're talking about infantry, than teens are often joining the IDF with the fitness level of a starting marine because they spend summer vacations getting ready. That's how they manege to maintain high quality fighting force, even if lacking in experience.
The rest of the army doesn't fight. Most of the IDF soldiers shot only 15 bullets throughout their entire service because their job is logistical/office job/whatever. This is also part of the focused specialization created to negate to negative effects of conscription (no combat-training resources spent on people that can't & won't fight).

I'm not dogging on the IDF here. They've proven to be one of the most capable land and air forces in the world-- especially when you look at them in the context of size. I just am skeptical that conscription leads to a sizeable measure of good compared to volunteers. I understand it's necessary given the population size, but if Israel could have a volunteer force of the same size would it not be better?

No. It's an army, and therefor is a clusterfuck and a mess. While armies fight the clusterfuckery with discipline, the IDF instead settled with rather super laxed out discipline that allows the low quality soldiers not to give a fuck- which will be noticed by the commanders that then can deal with it (not giving him work that he can fuck up, moving him somewhere where he won't cause trobule, etc.).
Another integral part of this system, is the general militarized culture and the high tregard the IDF is held in, which allows access to all information about future candidates as soon as high school. This also allows for testing for more important roles (intelligence analysts, for an example) to also start high school, thus maximizing the potential of the better quality manpower.
In conclusion: it's far from perfect, retards still manage to get to places where they don't belong, but compared to the rest of the armies in the world (this based on general info, as well conversations during joint trainings)- IDF's system is surprisingly decent.

The filtering process is fairly good, seeing as conscription is a given (unless you want to ruin your employment chances in the future by draft-dodging), many people have places they'd like to serve, and with a little motivation, a lot of hard work and a dash of luck you get it. Generally the best athletes go to combat roles, the intelligent athletes go to flight school/the Navy, the moderately intelligent get sent to technical duties (like aircraft maintenance), and the academic overachievers go to study for a degree funded by the army, in return for 3 more years of service.
The problematic people are generally filtered down to places where they'll be less dangerous, there are several units dedicated to people like this, so they end up with less intensive service doing what they can.
Women are generally drafted into different roles; training a conscript army with a high turnover rate requires instructors, and many are women; a lot of systems operators are women, as are a lot of desk jockeys-women are not bad at dealing with paperwork and such.
With the rate the IDF replaces its main force, there are some tards who get to places that they never should have, but only the relatively good guys get to sign for more as professional soldiers.
Another great aspect of the IDFs structure is that commanders are expected to do nearly everthing their subordinates are- the guiding motto of OCS is "ממני ראו וכן תעשו"- watch and follow. So you don't have as many sadistic DIs, as they have to go on the marches and so forth.
The IDF is far from the perfect place to serve, and there have been times when I hated it and every second there, but it isn't as bad as you might think from hearing "conscript army".

Usually no, but out of necessity, the IDF got as close as possible for such a massive, clunky, body to strking the balance between what pros can conscription offer (larger manpower variety) and what pros can profesionnal army offer (setting high training stardarts), while minimazing the cons of both. That's an important point as well. People greatly underestimate how significant moral is. We all saw what good equipment and good training is worth without moral when the Iraqi army faced ISIS. In Israel, the army, and the service, are admired.
There're programs for teens that peepers them for the army. People pay lots of money for this, spend entire summer vacations and days off school to make upside down crawls up dunes with wights on them. The army employs social programs and voluntary work for communities, all good work places require full service, some work places require service in specific units... Not in vain we say "it's not a country that has an army, it's an army that has a country".
This, and this alone, is what allows the IDF to exist in the way I described in the other sections. Same thing wouldn't work somewhere else.
