Is the Mosin Nagant truly the best shooter for the money?

I thought Mosins were just a meme but once I started looking into buying a bolt-action rifle, I realized that it's not easy finding a decent rifle that can shoot all day without overheating. Not unless you want to spend an asston of money.

Do I go for a Ruger American? Or a hex M39?

> I realized that it's not easy finding a decent rifle that can shoot all day without overheating. Not unless you want to spend an asston of money.
Actually it is easy. Just go with milsurp guns instead of bench queens. The Mosin Nagant will survive nearly anything but make damn sure you get the bolt working smoothly every time before you take it in the woods.

>Is the Mosin Nagant truly the best shooter for the money?
Go back even a couple years and the answer would probably be yes.
Nowadays surplus 54r is twice the price and so are mosins.
>>
>>30605904
So does that mean a m39 isn't a good buy for $350? What other decent shooter can I get for under $500?

No4 enfield
You can pick them up for around 350
Mine is personally a great shooter I can hit a man size target at about 800 meters no problem
Ammo is pricey but if you reload it's pretty cheap
>>
>>30606692
Yugo M48 Mauser.
SKS.
>>
>>30606692
It would still be a good buy. Ammo isn't cheap like it was, but it still isn't expensive. bottom line is, get what you want because you like it and want it.
>>
>>30605756
Hahahah mosins overheat. They get hot as fuck and all that tasty cosmo boils out of cracks you didn't know existed and from the deepest pits of hell in your wood
>>
>>30606692
Any modern bolt gun. A Mosin will start to heat up after 20 rounds.

Hell for $500 these days you can build an AR and that will both outshoot and be cheaper to shoot than a Mosin.
>>
>>30606959
Do you actually shoot guns or just shit up every mosin thread?

The only issue I have with the Mosin is that the bolt requires a bit more force to extract.

If you can afford one, a Yugo M48 Mauser is a great surplus rifle. 8mm Mauser is a bit harder to come back than 7.62x54R though.
>>
>>30606993
You can still bulk order it online though.
>>
>>30606993
Yugo and Romanian surplus is still cheaper than 30-06 though. Avoid Turk shit like the plague.
>>
Just get a fucking savage or Ruger American.
>>
They are called the Shit Stick for a reason. The main attraction was that they were cheap as fuck to buy and feed. Now that they are going up in price, there are far better options for the money. They are a pretty terrible rifle compared to Mausers and Enfields.
>>
>>30607025
>8mm surplus

Ehh, I'm kind of wary of 8mm surplus, personally. Haven't had a good experience with them.
>>
>>30607056
Same honestly. Yugo shit doesn't seal and sprays gas every 50 rounds. Really don't want to keep shooting it but I still have a few hundred rounds.
>>
>>30606692
>M39

That's the Finnish Mosin, right? You should absolutely pick that shit up.
>>
>>30606692

Whoa whoa whoa full stop you should not be spending over 250 period, you can still find them on armslist for 200.

For practical purposes you should get RUGER American. If you're into Slav shit and fun get a nugget.
>>
>>30607025
Romanian is almost as bad as Turk. The QC is so bad it seems like 10% of the rounds are just short on OAL, so they don't extract. Plus random fliers.
Yugo, Greek, or Prvi
>>
The "meme" meme needs to stop. Not everything is a meme. Mosins are great rifles for the price and the only problem you'll have will be sticky bolt.

I can buy pic related, an M38 (carbine mosin, no bayonet, much less common than 91/30) for ~$550. Looks to be in pretty good shape, all matching serials, excellent bore.

Wat do? I know it's steep for a mosin but I love this gun.
>>
>>30607355
Are there any other good commercial 8mm loads besides Prvi Partizan?
>>
>>30607383
Forgot this

manufactured by Izhevsk, 1943
>>
>>30607391
Not really. Some expensive hunting loads. Occasionally good Wolf Gold crops up.
Thing is, pretty much all commercial 8mm is super underloaded. Yugo surplus is currently king now that the other decent surplus is gone

A mosin is still fine, although a run of the mill 91/30 would be a lot cheaper than an m39 and do 99.9% the same thing.
Still, ammo prices used to be a HUGE consideration on the mosin's overall value. Nowdays surplus corrosive 54r costs about as much as cheaper noncorrosive 308. You almost may as well buy noncorrosive 54r and forget surplus exists IMO.
>>
>>30607358
Stop acting like a total meme then
>>
>>30607434
I take it there's a good variety of commercial, non-corrosive 54R available?
>>
>>30607423
Yeah, I heard American 8mm loadings are underpowered.

Sucks. I like the PPU I've shot, but I was hoping there would be other good loads in case PPU is unavailable.
>>
>>30606692
>Mosin for $350
far too much
>>30605756
>best shooter for the money
maybe when you could get them for $60 each
as another anon mentioned, 7.62x54R isn't as cheap/plentiful as it was just a year ago
>>30606921
no, too damn much
>>30607383
might be in good shape but that is WAY too much for a mosin...any mosin

It's mostly just 150gr fmj ammo out there, I prefer the whitebox LVE headstamped stuff.
But there's hunting ammo like pic related that should follow the same point of impact since it's still 150gr in weight. I bought it for my psl, but I prefer to have 150gr ammo anyway.
I've shot heavy ball, and I don't like how it shoots when I'm reaching out to my 400 yard steel.

>might be in good shape but that is WAY too much for a mosin...any mosin

Dude I know. I've passed on so many $75 mosins it's not funny but I'm in love with this one. The shop I get them from is notoriously overpriced (yeah and I'm a chump who pays those prices).
>>
>>30607540
haggle with them, use facts to your advantage, there's nothing wrong with trying:

- guns with all matching serial numbers are nothing special, the ruskies re-arsenaled these guns a few times and restamped serials onto replacement parts. Matching numbers means jack shit
- same goes for the stock, it was probably replaced in the 70's, nothing unique/original/rare about it being in decent shape
- be critical of the weapon overall, at the price you should be getting an unissued example with an immaculate finish and 100% blueing
>>
>>30607600
Thank you for your objective POV

>guns with all matching serial numbers are nothing special, the ruskies re-arsenaled these guns a few times and restamped serials onto replacement parts. Matching numbers means jack shit

This is a great point, esp since most m38s were refurb'd 91/30s

>probably replaced in the 70's
Didn't even consider this

>t the price you should be getting an unissued example with an immaculate finish and 100% blueing
Good to know.

>haggle with them, use facts to your advantage, there's nothing wrong with trying:
I always do, but they don't budge more than 10-15%... so, ~$470? Still not looking too great. What would you think is fair for that example, $200-300?

Thanks again, anon.
>>
>>30608087
Lowball him hard and back up your reasoning with these facts and the worst that can happen is he says"no deal" in which case you can laugh at him, order one from armslist, have it sent to that FFL for transfer, and walk out with your moderately priced rifle and a smile on your face

The only Remlins worth buying are post-2014 Marlin lever guns.
