So I bought an Ishapore 2a 1965 7.62 NATO a few days ago. I posted a thread but I still have an issue that I haven't found much about online.

When chambering a new round (loading one at a time because magazine spring is dead) it is very difficult to lock bolt into battery.. I've heard about screwing the bolt head farther down?

Also it has a pretty nasty coat of black paint all over it and it's dirty. I know I want to clean it and I've read a few different ways to do so, but should i also strip the paint and re-coat? Pic related is a gun with no paint, I'll post mine next for comparison

There's apparently an ongoing/long time debate about .308win vs 7.62 NATO. this gun is rated for milspec 7.62 NATO and because of a generous headspace it's not"recommended" to fire .308 commercial

Anyone know a cheap brand of milspec 7.62 or lightish loaded 308? I've found ZQI and I'm wondering about steel case Tulammo or brown bear

Ishapore is the worst of the Lee Enfields

300. And I disagree, but do tell me why.

It fires common ammo, it's just as well made as most other Enfields (memes of "India izshits" are invalid unless explained or backed up)

Resulting brass. The rifle is currently with a Smith who's trying to fix the magazine, find a tool for sight adjustment, and tighten the rear sight.

I've seen this gun mentioned on /k/ before and my brother has a mosin so I didn't want to bother with one of those. I have an m&p Shield 9 handgun and an old 16ga Remington wingmaster (1952) with slug loaded

this seemed like a decent addition until I get an AR or possibly something 7.62x39
>>
>>30605198
me too dammit. that guy is trolling unless he can back it up with something more than memes and the internet conjecture that is really disproved with adequate research

I really just want some advice on fixing it up. I got it because it was 100 cheaper than anything else I could find in my area or online, and I don't mind a bit of a project I can feel good about. AFAIK it will be a long lasting gun I can shoot for fun or for social work
>>
I'm having some problems myself with loading from a mag like you OP. But my problem stems from my firing pin on my No.4 mk 1's bolt sticking out. Chambers a single round fine and fires it with a pretty decent punch on the primer without piercing it. So I dont know if missing something on the bolt face or what.
>>
Poo in it
>>
>>30605013
Could be a head space problem. I had a similar problem with an M1 Carbine, but that turned out to be due to a fucked up gas system and the reality that it hadn't been shot in 70+ years. Eventually, I could cycle it manually by hand smoothly due to wear. I'd recommend getting some heads pace gauges. Baring that, go to a reputable gunsmith.
>>
>>30605023
I hope you picked this thing up cheap and it isn't your first rifle or something retarded.
>>
>>30605301
Really? I've read that it shouldn't close on a 7.62 NATO FIELD gauge? If it does, what's my next step?
>>
>>30605023

Green paint is an anti rust measure for when rifles were returned to armory for storage. This was fairly common across British Commonwealth were armories/manufacturers were located. It was routine to paint all the exposed metal surfaces.

When doing a FTR = Factory Thorough Repair "Arsenal Refurbish" they usually cleaned that shit off.

I don't know if that did that with the Ishapore 308
>>
>>30605367
Huh, Ok thank you, sounds like I'll remove it then
>>
>>30605013
Next time your bolt is out, tighten the bolt head down almost all the way (tight should leave it about 12 o'clock). That'll give you the intended headspacing.

If the problem persists, you'll need a new bolt head. And seeing as how .308 bolt heads for a No1 MkIII/Ishapore 2A aren't common, a gunsmith might be able to help you.
>>
oh the enfield gets me going like coffee such a sexy rifle and practical rifle the Ishapore being a copy does the same for me as the enfield
>>
>>30605013
I wouldn't buy an ishy if it couldn't handle .308, what's the fucking point. They're supposed to be cheap, and able to eat anything. They're usually fairly accurate too.

Did you buy that thing online?

We need an ishapore buyer's guide.
>>
>>30605013
every ish i've purchased came with that nasty black paint. if you look online, there are a few pics of these being used in the field. they also have the paint. i believe this is a factory finish.
>>
>>30605742
yeah i bought a old enfield for a couple hundred and it had a weird paint on it i asked a dealer and he said it was applied to keep rust away for me i brought it to a place and had them remove it looked like crap with the paint on
>>
>>30605583
Awesome thank you! And I do know a website that sells all manner of parts for this gun

As neat as poointheloo Enfields are, their basic design (and all rear-locking guns from ages of questionable metallurgy) make headspacing a serious issue due to receiver stretch.
>>
>>30605013
Most bolt actions are more than strong enough to handle effectively any ammo thrown in them. Just learn how to read pressure signs on you spent casting and check the first few rounds when you shoot/try a new brand. I would be more worried that the sights could be potentially off when using non 7.62 NATO but that is just me.
As for ammo, if you are willing reloading is probably the best choice. It may even help your chambering issue since the brass would match the rifle. I had a similar issue with a 7.62 NATO converted Chilean Mauser and having to force the bolt closed with fresh brass but after the second loading it would close no problem.

I've read about doing that a bit but are bulging cases and blown out primers the only signs? Because this is a case fired through it and it looks fine

>>30606376
look good to me. reload that and size with a SB die and it should chamber fine.
>>
>>30605938
Receiver stretch is ancient fuddlore. Plenty of rifles are rear locking.
Enfields tend to have been used more than other surplus rifles and lug recesses trend to be worn more.
>>
>>30606438
Alright cool, thing is i can't into reloading , not sure what kind of equipment I'd need to get started
>>
>>30606485
So from what I'm gathering here I am good to use .308 or milspec 7.62 . For what it's worth I've heard that there's never been a failure caused by anything but hot handloads with these
>>
>>30606539
die set, single stage press, scale, calipers, hand case trimmer, hand deburrer, shell holder, primer(either hand or one mounted on press), brass, bullets, primers and powder.

you could get this all for under $250 if you shop around and also buy used.

i like rcbs....it will last forever if you treat it right.
>>
>>30606544
i've shot thousands of commercial and surplus in mine without any problems.
>>
>>30605355
Bigger bolt face.

They made 3 steps of bigger bolt faces to compensate for the receiver stretch due to the rear locking.

Worry about finding a bolt face when you get to it.

Another tip for reloading equipment is to look for used. Most used equipment is perfectly functional or needs a minor repairs (new lock rings on dies for example) and you can get much better equipment for the price.
>>
>>30606627
Beautiful Mauser man, I love old bolt actions. Enfields have always made me drool and after I fired a Mosin the addiction was set in me

Now how about yugo m48 mausers? How much is the ammo? Recoil?

And as for the Enfield, so I should order headspace gauges? If so do they need to be a certain kind? And if I get reloading gear how do I learn? Google/YouTube?
>>
>>30607325
i have to agree. i've yet to see a rock chucker wore out. i've seen a few that have some rust on them but they work like new as soon as they have been cleaned and lubed. there are good deals on used dies and presses out there.
>>
>>30606948
Because .308 =/= 7.62 NATO
There is a headspacing difference.
>>
>>30607526
youtube is good. when i first started, i put a listing up on craigslist in the activities section looking for someone who wouldn't mind some noob sitting beside him while he reloads. the guy who answered was a bit weird but damn...he sure knows his stuff. ithe first day we reloaded, i must have pulled the press handle a thousand times(we made a couple hundred 30-06). i was happy to do it because i absorbed so much that day. i was even happier when he gave me all of the 30-06.
