I'm in a bit of a budget when it comes to finalizing my HD rifle and just need a light.
I might just put my X300 Ultra on my AR but I have a 16 inch midlength with an A2 sight. I need to buy a 9 inch freefloat rail along with a light mount that will push the light a bit far foward to minimalize shadowing, any suggestions? I still want to keep the A2.

Pencil, 1/12 is just barely good enough to stabilize 55gr M193 for accurate flight so when the bullet hits flesh it is more likely to yaw and fragment due to not being super stable.

For an accurate clone you want a pencil barrel with a 1/12" twist.
Government is heavy contour, adds weight, handles heat better and is more accurate. 1/12 handles 55gr and lower bullets where 1/9 is optimized for 62gr and higher.
Most people won't notice a difference and the A2 is a better barrel but looks wrong in an A1 build. Pic related

If you're going for a true retro build NoDak makes excellent reproductions. Call Windham if you're lookg more for a C7 upper, they've got a few in stock off the books. Delton as basic A2 uppers and Aero makes a nice, affordable flattop if you're going to be a fag about it.

Don't worry. I don't intend to. I completely agree with the sentiment of buying quality first and being done with it. I originally wanted to buy a KMR but I want to keep my A2 on and to my knowledge, it would be a pain in the ass to install it since I do not have a vise or torque wrench.
For me, it's either the $30 moe handguards or a $150 KMR. If freefloat single piece handguards were somehow drop in ready, I would buy it in a heartbeat, believe me.

I owned a PRO and sold it for an MRO.
Both are fine optics, the only problem in my mind with the PRO was its weight. PRO is about one pound including its mount while an MRO weighs 4.1 ounces (without mount). you can get the MRO for about $400 easily, quality mount is about $100. Larue sells the MRO and mount for $490.

Well the thing is, you really don't need a red dot or magnification to aim on the range.
If you are going to get simple BUIS get tritium ones, Troy tritium are good shit.
It works in the middle of the night when you hear a bump, won't need to remember to turn your cheap red-dot on before investigating.
If you get a red-dot for home defense, make sure it has the battery life to be left on for months or years. The Bushnell TRS-25 declines in brightness even with a good battery after being left on a single night.
You get what you pay for, pretty much. An $800 Trijicon TR24 1-4x would have great utility on the range and come in either battery powered or tritium + fiber optic. The battery powered variant only has a 31 hour runtime, something to keep in mind.

Thank you. I ordered a 20 inch barrel which based on what I'm reading is somewhat ill-suited for home defense. I'll look into Troy tritium, sounds like an interesting option. Although the good red dots like the MRO seem like they would retain their value if I wanted to sell.
