Most DOCs have something similar to this. I work for Nebraska Department of Corrections. I am on the CERT team which is effectively a team of ~150 members dedicated to riot control/controlling institutional disturbances. We employ a variety a different non-lethal and lethal weapons. We also have a SORT team that is full of a bunch of legit bad asses that use HK416s and MP5s, they're the team that responds to disturbances that will almost undoubtedly require lethal force, I've had the opportunity to work with them in the past for training and while activated for a riot that occurred last year, they don't fuck around. The lead SORT instructor was a SEAL.

SC former CO here. Our state's DOC is a fucking joke. Gangbanging niggers everywhere, shit training, shit security, understaffed, and 75% of my prison's CO's were overweight loud-mouthed black women.
There were multiple days when I had to run a whole dorm by myself. Thats 250 inmates and me (at a level 3 prison).
We had an RRT team (riot gear and beatsticks). Our SORT team was full of certified badasses though, even though our joke of a department only issued them with Remington police magnums and tacticooled mini-14s. Got to watch those glorious bastards drop gas through the ceiling and beat the shit out of some rioters one day. It was pretty lel.
Needless to say I wouldn't recommend being a CO in South Carolina to ANYONE.

Sounds a lot like NDCS to be honest, although your inmates are probably a lot harder than ours, we really pussify our inmates while they're in the system, it's pretty funny. Our training is also pretty terrible outside of CERT/SORT/CNT. We're also severely understaffed and underpaid, most of us are trying to get the fuck out and go to county corrections or local LE. We have no physical standards, lately we've been getting grossly overweight COs pouring in, a lot of straight up retards too. Hopefully they'll increase the pay soon and in-turn raise the standards. I would like to see a physical test at least on par with the Air Force or something, I'm sick of fat fucks who literally can't walk between housing units without gasping for air.
