Alright /k/, I'm now looking to own a pistol for concealed carry self defense. I've always put it off, but seeing the nig uprising across the states has made me finally decide to get one. I've always loved the design of revolvers, and saw this one at a local Academy for $329 and it looks decently sized for a concealed carry weapon while still looking powerful. Keep in mind I've never shot an actual gun before but I know they're loud as fuck and have a lot of recoil. Is this a decent self defense weapon? Can I do better?

What is it? If it's Taurus, buy something else. Don't fall for the low price bullshit, a lot of people find out the hard way that Taurus handguns are garbage.

>Taurus revolvers
I'd avoid it, step up to a Ruger LCR or SP101, optionally a S&W 642

The Taurus is cheap, sure, but when it comes to their revolvers and polymer framed guns, quality is all over the place on many of them.
Look for a better used gun instead.

It's a Taurus m85 Protector Poly. If it's garbage, what kind of revolver can I get instead? I'm trying to keep an under $500 price range on it.

>a lot of people find out the hard way that Taurus handguns are garbage

Their revolvers and plastic guns, yes, often they're trash, but somehow the PT92/99 is always alright, the only complaint being that factory magazines are often bad (but superior aftermarket alternatives exist)

S&W SD9VE and IAC shotgun.

Bersa Thunder and Maverick 88.

Armscor m206 and a Stevens 320.

You'll thank me later.

Used Ruger SP101 if you can find it, or a Ruger LCR

A word of advice with snubs, don't use Magnum loads, they don't actually bring anything practical to the table (not enough barrel length to make use of the larger powder charge), instead use .38 Special +P defensive loads.

He's looking for a compact revolver though.

Looking at it now, thanks. It looks good, but should I be getting the 357 or the 22? I know the 357 is more powerful but is it necessary over the 22?

If you're looking for a six shot self defense revolver that is easily concealable and won't break the bank, look no further than a Rock Island Armory M206 (M200 if you don't mind the longer barrel, but the M206 comes with fancy wood grips as well as the plastic ones, and I don't like polymer grips on a revolver)

The cost can run from around slightly under 250 to slightly under 300

.22LR isn't exactly a good defensive round, it's kind of a target practice and varmint round, out of a snub revolver, the performance would be exceedingly pitiful, I would not carry with it.

.357 Magnum is pointless for a snub revolver, but a .357 Magnum revolver can be loaded with .38 Special, and that's what snubs are for, so go for the .357 one

Too bad, though.

Cool as hell, but not rated for +p
>>30583632
Ruger sp101s may be hard to find in that price range, for me at least

>>30583525
OP I recommend the Smith and Wesson model 442
Easier to find in your price range and has a t
Legacy of reliability

People have died from pelletguns and stepping on rusty nails, that doesn't mean those are good at stopping threats.

Add to that the inherently poor reliability of .22LR and it's not a fantastic defensive round.

It can hit reasonably hard out of a rifle barrel but out of a snub revolver, the short barrel and the cylinder gap just makes it not worth it.

>>30583525
Budget is $500? Forget revolvers, get a compact semi that's on sale, or buy used. Shouldn't cost you more than $350. Then buy a cheap but reliable shotgun like the Maverick 88 with the rest of your money.
>>
>>30583525
Armscor 206 for compact or 200 for midsize. About $240 regular price, $200 on sale. And the reviews I've seen and people I've talked to like them, especially at that price point. The only way you'll effectively defend yourself is if you practice over and over as much as you can
